One day, life will evolve into an intelligence that will be able to look at the universe and see that it is all about the universe looking at itself.

Our meaning comes from living for the purpose for which we were created. If we are not created beings, then there can be no purpose, no meaning, no point to life.
Our human nature cannot bear to think about our lives having no meaning and those thoughts could well drive us insane or to suicide.
We can invent certain types of behavior, such as "the meaning of life means to make a difference", but these types of behaviors just give us good feelings with no reality behind it. When we think about real meaning, the reason for our very existence, we reject living for our own self centered good feelings.
I would rather seek God (and therefore real meaning and purpose) even though I don't know for sure that God even exists.
