All I can say is that I am a lay advisor on the Vatican's Ecumenical Advisory Board. I have Th.D.'s in both Comparative and Dogmatic theology. I have been active in SCA for more than 25 years. And I am the character of the Sorceress in my local annual Ren Faire.
She's very popular as she points the way through faith to her God, who of course IS God, is NOT nature and NOT the devil.
It's all in the presentation and the way in which one witnesses.

For the record, a very good Christian friend of mine is a Live Role Player and sees nothing wrong with the mentioned activities
What was the reasoning behind this claim. Did they say why it was a "scandal"? Why should it be "un-christian " to raise awareness and to educate others in an entertaining fashion about world history? I'm not a christian myself but I'd be interested in hearing the explanation of the person who told you this. How did they justify their position?

The kind of person who would tell you it's a scandal, is the kind of person who will tell you that *everything* that a minister does, other than being a minister, is a scandal.
Good episode of "King of the Hill", one where Billdozer is dating the minister of their church...Even tho there is nothing wrong with it (no vow of celibacy), the church was scandalized by their minster going on dates, and falling in love, and acting like it. (I can just here some twit out there already going on about "cartoons")
So, just ignore the scandal mongers, if they aren't scandalized by one thing, they'll find something else to gossip about, it's what they do...

I think that a minister is a man . A man set apart on one hand but still person living in a community. I don't see participating in a Renaissance Faire would be acceptable behavior. I would still respect and look up to him for spiritual guidance.

if someone is so insecure in their faith, that they need to dictate the harmless hobbies of someone else, then they have a real problem. there is nothing scandalous about sca, renfests, or anything of that nature. it's a hobby. it's not a way of life, it's not a 'calling'.
i have great compassion and respect for someone who can say to me "my religion is strict and makes this and that demands on me," i have great contempt and disdain for someone who can say to me "my religion is strict, and makes this and that demand on you".
if someone is a minister, isn't it their responsibility to teach and to shepherd their congregation? why are they allowing the ignorant to lead them?

I think organized religion is way to ready to judge others.
Your relationship with god is between you and god, noone else, like it or not believe it or not. what is the intent of your actions that is what is weighed here, choose love/fellowship in your action not dominion/juding others and you will be fine. Those who spend their life judging (even those who judge in the name of god) will NOT see father at the end.

Sound like someone is too controlling. As long as you aren't against G-d when in character. Have fun! I do.

If one was re-enacting pagan rituals or festivals, it really is not compatible with Christian practice so yes it would be wrong. If just playing at being Viking than I can't see anything wrong in it. I am a born again believer of 22 years.
