The best thing you can use, and take it from someone who gets migraine headaches frequently, is Excedrin Migraine. Take it at the onset of any discomfort, when you feel a migraine coming on. You can also use a higher dosage of ibuprofen (Motrin) 600 mg - 800 mg.

However, you should see a doctor to have your headaches examined to be sure that they are migraine headaches, and not a result of something else. There are tension and stress headaches, sinus headaches, chemical dependence (caffeine or sugar headaches), cluster headaches, and then of course pressure caused by abnormal occurrences in the brain can cause 'headache' feelings (tumors, aneurysm, etc.).

Another good suggestion is to put an ice bag or ice pack on the area where the pain seems to be coming from (the neck, the eyes, the temples, the crown, etc.) to help constrict the blood vessels. Sometimes, a good strong cup of coffee (drink it black) can help to be a quick solution.

With regard to migraines, honestly, once the aura starts flashing and my vision goes askew...nothing helps.

However, my Dr had me try Propranolol a few years back and it has helped 100x more than anything else ever has. It is, however, a beta-blocker and that has drawbacks for some...and its not OTC, prescription only.

excedrin migraine is the best i've used and i've tried a lot of things, however everyone's different.

also try drinking lots of water. migraines can be brought on by not getting enough water

i've also heard eating bananas can help. i know it sounds weird, but it's something to do with the potassium in the banana. i've never actually tried it so i'm not sure how well it works.

I suffer from migraines also and the best I have used is large quantities of ibuprofen (1000 mg). Before you try this though, make sure your doctor okays it.

none of the above. Over the counter meds are combinations of Tylenol [acetaminophen], Aspirin [acetylcylic acid], Ibuprofin [Midol and others], caffeine, and Alleve [naproxin sodium]. None of those are enough for me.
An ice pack, sunglasses, dark room, quiet, and 2 prescription Darvocet help me.
