You can get a free VIN check quite similar to Carfax from NICB.org. It doesn't give a complete history of the car, but it does tell you whether it has been reported stolen or as a total loss.
If you are looking for a complete vehicle report for free, it is not free.
You can get cheap vehicle reports from reliable sites instead of Carfax.
I personally use Vinaudit. This site provides instant history reports for used
vehicles in partnership with the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System.
Feel free to visit their site for more information.
To avail of a 50% discount, (pay only $4.99 per report) make sure you
use this discount coupon link: http://bitly.com/50OFF_Report

Free Carfax reports are only available on cars that are also free at your local dealer. Seeing as no one is giving away cars, meaning there is no free car, there is also no free Carfax report!! Either the seller (dealer) pays for it, or you do.
In this case, if you want a Carfax report, you will have to pay for it yourself.

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.
Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net that has been around since 1995.

With all due respect, if you can not afford the price of a full search...what makes you think that we can?
I don't mean this disrespectfully, but even dealers have to pay for Carfax & Autocheck full reports.
I sell cars & I provide a free report/history to my customers on EVERY pre-owned car that I sell.
(I also run a report on potential trade-ins as part of the appraisal !)
BUT that does NOT mean that I get free reports.
***************
You should ask the SELLER of this vehicle to provide the reports,
If there is nothing to hide, the seller can & should run the report, make it available to potential buyers, & absorb the fee.
***************
I/We consider that a cost of doing business & it protects BOTH the buyer & seller.
Carfax & AutoCheck companies are NOT non-profit organizations. They charge for their research results & rightly so....They also do not allow paying users to run results for non-paying users.
(excerpt from their Terms of Use: " You may not modify, publish, transmit, display, participate in the transfer or sale, create derivative works, or in any way exploit any of the Content, in whole or in part." )
AGAIN- no disrespect intended!
They just don't allow it.
I am Sorry.
