My cat has been a diabetic for many years now. She has been very hard to control but I have had her well under 200 which is great for her ( but still too high). This morning she was 119 and for the last few feedings when it is time for insulin she has only taken maybe one bite and walks away. I am still giving insuling and checking her levels but this is not like her, I am worried something else could be wrong. I have even tried several different foods thinking she was tired of the same can food everyday.

Thank you for your help.

Duffy,
thanks for the advice but Kacee my cat was on the prescription canned good and it got to the point where she would no longer eat it. She was tired of the same thing and my Doctor had her to do a curve several times and watch her all day but we discovered the prescription food eas making her run high for some reason. I now have her on an over the counter Fancy feast ( vet recommended) because there are about 2 flavors I can switch up for her that contain 17% protein.

Belinda,

I have a diabetic cat, too, and have been giving her insulin for 5 years. She has Purina DM available all the time and gets moist food 3x daily. She gets 2 units PZI in the morning. She turned 14 in June.

Insulin should not be given if she is not eating or you will send her into a hypoglycemic state. I did this with my cat by accident, so I am very cautious now. Hypoglycemia is very dangerous and can be fatal. Continue testing, but hold off with the insulin until she starts eating. I have attached a link which gives more information about hypoglycemia.

Kelley feels best when her BG is in the 175 - 225 range, she is alert, active, eats well, grooms more diligently and is more talkative.

Use her BG numbers as a guide, but not all inclusive.

Observe her...how is she acting, is she grooming, is she alert or lethargic, is she drinking more water, less water or the usual amount? Is she doing the usual output in the litterbox? Is she 'refusing' food or appearing 'not interested'?

Has there been a household change that could have upset her? A change in your work schedule that takes you away from home for a longer period?

If the 'not eating' continues for more than a day, I would call her vet. As diabetic owners, we know this disease is nothing to fool around with!

Are you familiar with the website felinediabetes.com? They have a message board that you could post your question there also, and get help from some very experience folks with diabetic kitties. Any time I have had a concern, that is the first place I go!

Prayers and Purrs to both of you!

Don't know what you're feeding her. But at the clinic I worked at, We had very good results with canned Science Diet WD.
It's a prescription diet you can get at your vet. Obviously you know what you're doing if you're checking her levels often. I would give the vet a call and ask. He might want to take a look to see if it might be something else. You said she has been diabetic for many years. She might need a senior wellness check up. Good Luck

Have you tried meat baby food?

There are two very good feline diabetes lists on yahoogroups, probably more actually, sign on to one of them and the diabetic cat owners there can offer you good suggestions.

I've got my diabetic cats (two) on EVO and Royal Canin Siamese 38, but need to tempt one with a small portion of 'forbidden' cat food the other guys get, so he can get his shot in the morning and evening. I've also used deli ham (half a slice) to get him eating when he didn't want anything.

Hi

So happy you are testing

119 is a non diabetic number, please do NOT shoot and wait an hour and test again.
What food do you feed?
Some cats can go into remission especially if on a low carb canned food
