I think that the many different ethnic groups that make up America have contributed their own versions of how to use cheese. So naturally, as Americans, we have adopted these recipes as our own and created some more. My family came from Italy, but except for a little parmesan or romano cheese to enhance the flavor of spaghetti and the mozarella and ricotta cheeses used in making lasagna, the only time you would see cheese was on a plate with fruit for dessert. And it is a very nice dessert, too. I had never had feta cheese until I ate a salad in a Greek restaurant, and I'm afraid I am hopelessly smitten! CarolSandyToes1

Because cheese is the greatest source of happiness in the world? That would be my guess. I never realized that Americans used that much cheese, but now that I think about it...yeah, we do, I think during the Revolutionary war the first Americans got together at continental congress and said 'now, how do we change our ways from the british? No more tea! Lets rename Football Soccer! How about not using vinegar and begin using cheese instead!'

What a great question. I am so happy to see a few people that, like me, cannot stand cheese. I have been to restaurants where every single selection came with cheese...optional to leave it off luckily.

I am going to ask the question sometime, "How much cheese do they make every week, and how many cows does it take??"

One cheese loving friend of mine said it was a "fun food". That puzzles me also. Maybe there is a cheese gene and I just didn't get one....

Because Americans are fat and stupid and will believe anything told to them. The USDA has been working with the Dairy industry for 30 years convincing people to eat more cheese. It works. We are less healthy, but a few guys made a few million so that s all that matters in a capitalist society.

As a generalization I guess we do eat a lot of cheese, but not on -everything-. But cheese is good, and has protein and calcium. Every country (in general) eats cheese, and usually has varieties of their own. Say like Mexico has cotija and manchego, the UK makes a great stilton, France has many cheeses including brie and camembert, Italy has a ton of cheeses, Greece has feta, etc...

Cheese is good stuff, and enhances/goes with many types of food - sweet, savory, etc. It has fat, protein and salt, tastes we all crave.

But Amercians are not the only cheese-lovers: the French and English have their cheese plates for dessert, the Swiss have fondue, and much in Italy is finished with cheese.

Who says? That's a huge generalization isnt it? I cook with cheese maybe 2 times a week...that is not putting cheese on everything.
