I used to keep my kitten in the bathroom when I wasn't home, to keep him from chewing on electrical wires during his teething time. If you keep the lid down, it is a safe, cool place to keep them, so I don't agree about locking them out of the loo. And HITTING them with a toilet paper roll? FUGDDABOTIT. They'll just think you are plaing and they will love the TP roll even more, or else if you club them hard enough, you will hurt them or their feelings, and teach them mistrust of you.
Take the toilet paper roll off the roller. Get a nice kitty-cat smack-em toy that dangles down, and put that on the roller, since this is obviously one of their major stops on their daily rounds. Also, i really, really recommend you get them a Cat Dancer, which costs about $8, is embarrassingly simple, but really keeps them busy. I have seen one kitten jump at this enticing little piece of cardboard on the end of a wire all day and all night, with rest breaks and breaks for eating and potty.
Put the toilet paper roll itself inside a little basket or box, something with a lid that permits you easy access and the kittens no access, and keep it on the back of the toilet or somewhere nearby so you can get to it without effort when you need it, but they can't get to it at all.
TP lust is a passing phase. If you give them other things, they will forget about it. And in a couple of months, you can return the TP to its usual place -- unless, in the interim you haven't trained yourselves to prefer it in its new place.
Good luck with your pre-adolescents. They sound like a delightful handful.

I know there's a toilet paper roll cover on the market, which is a last resort actually.
If flipping the roll to unwind the other way (from the back) doesn't work, try wrapping a piece of velcro around it to act as a cinch so it won't unwind. You may still get some chewed edges, but the velcro will be easy to remove when you need to use the toilet paper and won't be too much of a hassle.

Hi sounds like your cats can be a handful. lol you should try putting the poilet paper rolls in the cubhard if htere is one in your bathroom to keep them out of your cats reach if your cats learn to open cubhards try those child safety locks that you have to press down from the top to get the door open enough to get anything out. If you can't do that you should try using a squirt bottle if you catch the cats with the toilet paper spray them witth the water they should get detured from going near them if you catch them a few times make sure you get them a coule times pretty fast and tell them no! leave it alone! or don't touch! hope this helps!

They may or may not grow out of it. My cats prove they haven't everytime I try to see if they have, and they also love paper towels. I solve the problem on toilet paper by keeping them in a plastic container on the toilet tank back. What fits perfectly is the 3 lb soft margarine container. I no longer have to even put the lid on, so anyone entering the bathroom will imediately see where the toilet paper is.

Haha... my cat did the same thing when she was a kitten. I stopped putting the toilet paper on the actually toilet paper holder and bought something like this http://www.ikea.com.sg/products/product_display.asp?id=4
I keep up to 4 rolls on there and my cat can't seem to get enough grip to destroy it, I would take it off the holder, use it and then put it back. Now that she is 1 year old - I can put the toilet paper back on the holder and she doesn't fuss with it.

DO NOT SPRAY ANYTHING ON IT!!!! Did you forget you might be using this item yourself later? Just place the rolls under the sink out of sight...shut the bathroom door when you are not in there, and get a water spray bottle and spray them everytime you catch them with it...that will teach them not to do it...

Nope. They're kittens. That's just what they do. Keep the door shut and put a sign on the door asking people to keep it shut and not let the cats in. My kitten is just over four months, and she destroys EVERYTHING.
Maybe if you have company over you could find a bedroom to lock the kitties in for a few hours?

They will grow out of it. Meanwhile...
Put spring hinges on the bathroom doors to make them close.
Lock th TP in a cabinet.
Put mostly empty rolls on the floor for them to play with.
Keep a spray bottle of water in the bath and give them a squirt when they are unrolling the paper.

I'm sure it's tough keeping them out of the bathroom in an active household. If you catch them playing with the TP, give them a firm NO, pick them up by the scruff (like mama) and remove them from the room. Give them with acceptable toys.
If that doesn't work - I'd go for the squirt gun. Just don't spray the TP.
I recommend squirt guns. My cats don't play in plants, don't go on the kitchen counter, don't play with the tp, don't harass our birds, and are trained to stay in the yard when we go out - all thanks to a squirt gun. They get a warning first, then I take aim. After a couple of times, they figure it out.

you can't stop them, this is cat's nature, playing with rolls whether tissue or papers or whatever. all you have to do is keep them in a place where they can't reach it...
or one more idea, whenever you find them doing this spray water on them, cats fear water, so they'll know that this is a bad thing to be done... just like children
no one can stop nature
