There is a lot misinformation here. First of all, if the ak-47 is NOT full automatic (a machine gun as described by the NFA) than it is legal to buy in most states. Some states have laws banning them. Some don't. California, Massachusetts, New York all have bans on this type of firearm. Full autos are regulated by the NFA and by some states who do not allow them. Though in some states like California it has recently become aware that some Ak types and AR type rifles are legal to buy if they meet the Assault Weapon standards (like no "evil" features or with a fixed magazine.) I know because I have 3 ak's and ar-15. Completely legal if you keep it legal under the law. (thank you for your screw ups California DOJ) You shouldn't worry anyways of it becoming illegal. Congress right now are very pro-gun (the majority of Democrats voted in are pro-gun) and plus you have to fight against the NRA, which is no easy task, just ask the Brady Campaign. Not only that..you have the Parker vs. DC case that is going to SCOTUS..which will most likely deliver a victory to gun owners, etc. As for the 2nd meaning just the federal or state, that will be decided in SCOTUS.

Facing the facts, I believe that our beloved AK 47 will be shortly becoming illegal. (tear) I was just looking at picking up another M70 recently, chipmunks you understand, but was worried that if they do become illegal, they would ask we the people to give our arms up. Would this happen, or would they be grandfathered in? Thoughts?
FACTS?
Number 1 the AK-47 is NOT our beloved weapon. It is a weapon designed and built in Russia (USSR).(Kalashnikov).
Number 2 legal AK-s are NOT FULLY AUTOMATIC, only semi unless you have a special ATF permit to own a full auto weapon.
Number 3 only an idiot would use an AK-47 on small game like chipmunks.

It is a semi-automatic rifle, you were able to buy a semi-automatic rifle before WW1, Winchester made one in 1905 and Remington made one in 1907 so this is not any type of new development. What the anti gun people are trying to do is to give everything a scary name, if you have a hunting rifle with a scope they will call it a sniper rifle, if you have a pump shotgun they will call it a gangster weapon. Anyone out there that had purchased a firearm legally is not going to turn it in or give it up, because this would be illegal. Sarah Brady can cry all she wants, too bad so sad.

Amnesty for guns.. You either posted in the wrong section or you have created a mind puzzle to prove your point or view about immigration (or illegal immigration). I doubt any sporting man shoots chipmunks with an AK 47 :D
Chuck_Jr: LOL those illegal chipmunks...

Shooting chipmunks with an AK-47. Just a little overkill there.
I suppose you go duck hunting with a bazooka.
If the weapon becomes illegal you'll have to surrender it.
Just so we remain on topic here, I'll guess the chipmunks came into this country illegally...

For now, it depends on the state where you live. California is not friendly to the AK 47. People who had them were allowed to register them and keep them, but no more were allowed after that. We're assuming the semi-auto version, right?

The Second Amendment:
A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.
The original intent and purpose of the Second Amendment was to preserve and guarantee, not grant, the pre-existing right of individuals to keep and bear arms.
I believe the Sate has the right to require you to register your weapon, but to take it away would be unconstitutional. "The right to keep and bear arms shall ot be infringed," seems pretty self explanatory to me.
We were never given the right to have guns, we were simply guaranteed that right could not be taken away.
The only way any one can take your weapons is to pass a law which is in direct violation of the Constitution. Which wouldn't surprise me at all, they are slowly chopping away at the Constitution already.
They are forgetting the whole "By the people, for the people, of the people, and with the consent of the people."
Thomas Jefferson ( the author of our country’s Constitution) is quoted as saying to a John Cartwright in 1824 “The constitutions of most of our States assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves in all cases to which they think themselves competent…, or they may act by representatives, freely and equally chosen; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed; that they are entitled to freedom of person, freedom of religion, freedom of property, and freedom of the press.”
Keep your AK 47, you have the right.
Hitler, Mao Tse-Tung, Stalin, Idi Amin, Castro, Pol Pot, Kim Jong-il, and Quaddafi, combined they have killed over 56 million people, and they all understood what our politicians are coming to understand.
A disarmed public, is an easily controlled public.

If a particular weapon becomes illegal, then you must surrender that weapon. Just as any other item or object that becomes illegal to own -- you cannot get punished for owning it before the law went into effect, but you can be punished for continuing to own it after the law goes into effect.
And no, before anyone asks, the 2nd Amendment does not apply if it is a state law that regulates gun ownership. Like the 7th Amendment, and the Grand Jury clause of the 5th Amendment, the 2nd Amendment only applies to federal gun regulations. It was never incorporated against the states.

if they become illegal they will be illegal, I doubt there will be a grandfathering right...why in the world do you want an AK 47 in the US? I understand in a different country where they are common in the hands of criminals but they are rare here. I also am an avid gun owner so no anti gun nut here. However, there is such a thing as excess.
