I'm talking metaphysically here, thoughts/beliefs creating reality etc.

If you affirm a particular belief (ie: I AM SUCCESSFUL) then that belief becomes your reality, with regular repetition.

But what would happen if you affirmed an actual concept (ie:SUCCESS, HAPPINESS, HEALTH, GLORIOUS LIFE) and repeated that over and over in your mind.

Would that also have the same effect?

I read that it can sometimes be better to change your thoughts this way, because with beliefs, you sometimes get doubts cropping up, but you don't get that if you are merely affirming a concept.

What I mean is:

* What would happen if I affirmed a BELIEF? (ie I AM SUCCESSFUL)

* What would happen if I affirmed a CONCEPT instead of a belief (ie the word SUCCESS on its own)

Affirmations can help, but they can be a bit like sprinkling sugar over sh:t.
Better to deal with the sh;t underneath first or it will just come seeping through again,

rw makes an excellent, important (and beautifully colorful) point.

Do you mean to affirm a concept in general terms? Then you are simply repeating truth, without bringing in the "I am" aspect. The effect would be dreams of wheels spinning, a sense of being stuck in the mud. Think of this: we make affirmations constantly. "I'm too fat." "I am stupid and ugly, and never will succeed." "I don't test well."

It is the belief/conviction behind the affirmation that matters. Those we make habitually are our true prayers; that is why they work, and the "new" affirmations don't seem to work at all, or not as well.

true. realistic affirmations become reality. what we think has alot to do with what we are. it sounds like you have a phobia about the word belief. concept and belief are closely related. the difference is a belief is more personal and more of an action word. i can talk about or think about a concept without believing it. a concept can become a belief. everyone that thinks believes something its getting in touch with it that is the kicker...

I suggest watching the movie "The Secret". Affirmations are useless if you just repeat them over and over and it matters not if they relate to belief, concept, positive or negative. It takes a lot of introspection for this to work. For instance, you can affirm the thought "I am rich" if you want money, but it's usually not the money you really desire, it is security, happiness, joy, etc., and money won't buy those. If you are trying to change your basic personality, that won't work either because you can't. Good luck on your journey, and remember, it really is the best part. Peace.

Sounds like faith with actions, huh? Truth is we do create our own reality. Anything you put energy into or your thoughts into becomes your/a reality. With a belief or religion, many people are creating or buying into an already established reality with their thoughts. Thoughts equaling energy. What or where ever we pour our energy into becomes a reality. Since all thoughts are energy, a creative force, an establishing force, anything is possible. Your imagination is your limit. Why do you think the Christians in the bible were so concerned with imagination? They knew that people would leave them left and right once they energized and established their own reality. You are on the right path. Don't let up now.

Affirmations are a powerful tool. Maybe the most powerful for the purposes you've described if you're dealing with fundamental challenges in your life, such as, say, anger, greed, envy, gluttony, etc.

You might try something, say, such as basic gratitude affirmations... five specific things in your life you're grateful for when you awaken in the morning. Five different ones before you sleep. Five next morning, at least half not carried over from the previous day.

If, after a couple of weeks, you discover you've discovered something, you might add five individuals you need to forgive for something, and five issues you need to forgive yourself for, to the morning and evening sessions.

If you try it for thirty days you'll be able to answer your own question about affirmations, and won't have to rely on what anyone tells you.

I'll say that again:

If you try it for thirty days you'll be able to answer your own question about affirmations, and won't have to rely on what anyone tells you.

There's a lot of opinion about metaphysical issues floating around here and anywhere else you listen. Most of it is BS.

If you want to know something you're going to have to learn it, try it, and test it yourself. Trusting anonymous strangers, such as myself, is folly.

Concept and belief. Mmm. Aren't these just symbolic representations of the same thing?

If happiness is a state of mind that you affirm as true while you are facing a tsunami then you will die blissfully unaware that the concept of happiness was always a brief delusion.
