My son was carjacked in Florida 2 weeks ago, he called the police right away, and they found the car that night. The crocks had maskes on and could not be identified, so the Police had the car impounded with a hold on it while they did their investigation, which is now complete and the hold has been removed, BUT, the impound lot is charging my son for the hookup and daily storage, he is now up to $500. that he has to pay to get the car out! he cannot pay that, and I cannot help him right now either,

Is this correct? He was a crime victim and now he has to pay to get his propert back? THis just is not right. Please any information to help would be appericiated.

Unfortuantely the impound yard is correct. They can legally recover their costs even if your son was a victim. This is one of the incredibly outrageous situations that many people aren't aware of. The only way to fix it is through state law.

I don't know how this stuff usually works but I'd find out if the impound lot is owned by the city or third party. If it is the city 's you can go to the mayor or town concil. If it is a third party try talking to the manager or owner and see if you can get this reduced you know 100 or so to get your car back is not fair but it is worth it. Maybe they could put you on a payment plan just between you and the company. Stay calm and talk reasonably. Someone has to have a better deal for you than this 500 stuff.

well , im not going to pretend i know about the law , but that defientley sounds WRONG!

Get some free legal advice. take the issue up with police as well.

Write or ring to the relevent authoriteis / whoever over looks the proper pracitice in relation to impounding cars. Although im not sure who overlooks the proper practice of impounding cars, like the guy above me wrote the council most probably.

most people these days are looking for an easy dollar , you should definetly not pay for that!

All he needs to do is take a copy of the police report to the impound lot and they will release the car to him. If not call the police and they will make the tow lot give him the car back. It is not standard practice to victimize the victim any further.

Have your son contact the Victim's Advocate office for the agency that is investigating the crime.

Contact the newspaper or local news station to draw attention to this issue. I don't know where he was, but in Tampa there is a channel 8, with an investigative reporter, the program is called "8 on Your Side" that resolves this type of issue.
