I grew up with German Shepherds. They are highly intelligent and make wonderful family dogs if they are raised right. They learn quickly and want to please. Because of their intelligence, they can be independent thinkers though. If you have never owned a German Shepherd, I strongly suggest you take your puppy to classes so both of you will benefit. Although I don't have a German Shepherd now, that breed will always have a special place in my heart. They are truly great dogs.
One thing you must do is visit a breeder and meet the parents and, hopefully, the grandparents of your prospective puppy. That will give you an idea of their temperament and soundness. You might also consider a written contract with the breeder in the event that your dog develops hip dysplasia which is a major concern in all of the large breeds. Many times breeders will claim their line is free of hip dysplasia but I know people who have paid thousands for a GSD only to have that disease show up two or three years later.

Any breed of dog makes a good pet. Its the owners that makes pets aggressive. Any animal that is born doesn't come into the world with instructions, they are born deaf and blind until a few days old. Any animal that grows into an aggressive one you can guarantee has been treated badly. A German Shepard (Alsatian) is a good breed and usually preferred as a pet because of its faithful nature. It makes a good guard dog also if it is bought as a puppy and treated well through its life this type of dog will not give you any problems, but remember...dogs that are well looked after can be a part of your life for anything up to 13 years and beyond and that is a big commitment to make. It is not something to mistreat because the dog no matter what, will love you and it will always be there for you, they deserve respect and all the animal wants from you is food, shelter and love with a lot of respect for it.

I have had three German Shepperd's in my life as well as other dogs & I will say beyond dout that they are the most loyal & obediant dogs around . The first one I got from Battersby dogs home , he was great with the kids but got boared and started to chuw up everything . That can be one of there problems but the love & loyelty you get back far out waight the damage . So I say go for it

They are intelligent and very active dogs but need TLC. Feed them good food and exercise them and they will have a healthy life. Shepherds can develop back problems when they get old so you will have to make sure that you are a dedicated owner that will care for your dog. Here are several links to read up on German Shepherds.

What a load of coblers, Tony Tiger.
When a dog "turns" it is always for a reason. Either a medical one, or they may have been teased by kids.
Shepherds are one of the most intelligent breed, and hopefully our asker will buy from a reputable breeder who will assist him with puppy hood and training questions.
He will go to obedience classes and everything will be bonza.

i,ve had quite a few large breed dogs including the sheppard they are nice enough dogs but for intelligence and easiness to groom if you want a dog of that size i would recomend the doberman or the rottwieler i will probably get some stick off the german sheppard people for saying that but at the end of the day its personal preference after all they are all german what looks better bthan a well behaved and well groomed dobie

They are big, strong willed dogs. If you have the time and inclination to train them properly, and exercise them EVERY DAY, then you can have a loyal and intelligent pet. If not, go for an easier breed.

Absolutely, my 6 year old male ( Faxon ) is obedient, intelligent and very protective. I would highly recommend getting one. Be sure you inquire of the breeder if there is any family history of any hip problems , large dogs do have problems in this area.

I got bitten by a German Shepherd when I was 3. It has left me terrified of dogs and especially those ones. Mind you my brother says I bit it first.
