i am not a religious person. i was sitting here thinking about life and i dont want any answers praising god, i only want athiest answers. i have had both my parents die and it is sort of sad that i dont believe in a higher power but i came to the realization that there is none. i believe purely that we die into nothingness, no memories or anything just everything lost because how can we have any of that when the thing which stores everything is oxygen starved and has died... sorry rambling on. i believe that white light everyone sees is the eyes dieing. i would like to know what other STRICTLY NON RELIGIOUS people think. thankyou for your answers it would help understand a bit more.

Since there is no afterlife and heaven and hell are only wishes to appease fear of death, I believe that when you die, you expire. Your lifeforce is extinguished and your body begins to decay. You are buried or cremated...whatever your final wishes are for your remains and you become a memory for as long as there are people to remember you. Then you suffer the same extinction as the billions of people who have died before you that you never knew.

The Atheist Bible, it could be said, has but one word: "THINK." - Emmett Fields

I have been with a few people in my life time who has passed on. It appears to be a peaceful state to enter. They apparently just go to sleep. The wonderful thing is that all the age lines, worry lines, lines of suffering are erased from their faces and they look so young and relaxed. I even saw one smile, which was such an awesome thing for family to see. As a Christian, I believe that at that point, they enter into the presence of God and stay until Heaven has been established.

When you die...you're dead. End of story. Nothing. Cease to exist. And in time your body will fade away. Only thing left of you is the impact you made when you were alive. The memories people have of you. But there is no soul that floats around looking for a taxi to some magical afterlife. You are dead!

I struggled with the same question when I became an atheist. My reasons for becoming atheist were because I figured all religions created God. but I couldnt let go of my beliefs of what happens after we die. oddly, I still believed in the spiritual side of it all, and our intuition, and all the unexplainable mysteries. Religions are just every ones version of God, so now I simply have my own version. I now believe our intuition is God. Follow your own intuition.

unfortunately there is no passing into nothingness. Your consciousness is eternal; that is, you can never turn off your mind. Bummer eh? Have never died fully so can't tell you where you go/what you do, etc. There are tons of books out there by people who have experienced death on the operating table/during accidents and who have been brought back to life to tell about witnessing their own death/what the doctors around the operating table were saying, etc.
Try reading what you can by Dr. Raymond Moody. Stories from kids are rarely discounted.

Several years ago I had an unusual experience concerning an uncle, a distant relative who lived over a thousand miles away.
While driving my car I suddenly felt the unmistakable presence of this relative that I hardly even knew. He was more like someone I had heard about than someone I knew. It was very strange; it felt as though I was momentarily lifted right out of my physical body. I seemed to be suspended somehow beyond space and time, bathed in a love so intense It felt like I could have just disappear into it at any moment if It would have let me. It only lasted for a few seconds, but it seemed to last forever at the same time. I realize how crazy this must sound. The experience was so strong that at first I was afraid I was loosing my grip on reality. I finally managed to chalk it up to an over active imagination.
Three days later I got a call from my aunt telling me that this uncle we are talking about had gone into a coma and died the day I had the experience. It felt like ice water had been poured down my back when she told me this. I had lost any real ideas of God or faith and had become somewhat of an atheist. Needless to say this experience caused me to rethink some of the conclusions I had come to.
I feel blessed to now understand that even in our darkest confusion something loves us so much that it went out of its way to assist me and bring me back to a state of absolute certainty about Gods love for us.
During the experience it seemed like there was a vast amount of information that I was somehow allowed access to. One thing that I came away from this experience understanding beyond any shadow of a doubt was that any Idea that God is unhappy with us or would judge or allow us to be punished for any reason is simply impossible.
I can’t explain the love I felt with words. They simply don’t make words big enough or complete enough to do this. The only way I can begin to convey this love to you is to say that there was simply nothing else there. Nothing but love. No hint of judgment, no displeasure of any sort. It is as though God sees us as being as perfect as we were the day we were created. It is only in our confused idea of ourselves that we seem to have changed.
I hope this is of some help to you. Good luck. Love and blessings.
Your brother don

I do believe we go into nothingness - we are destroyed. It's the end of our life. We become part of the earth. But I'd be happy to change my thoughts if given proof of otherwise.
ps: I am really sorry for your loss....

This cannot be answered by a person who does not believe in God.
Because any who have died have not been able to get the information back...from wherever they are...
Only the Bible can answer the question.

You reincarnate. Why do you think you have so many fears in this life? It's because of things that have happened to you in past lives. Read up on this. It's a very interesting topic that clears many things up that churches put into peoples head for money.
