Depends on what you wish to cover. I have a 24-85mm that I love. A 28-80mm covers a nice middle range. Just avoid any "D" lenses as they are only for the smaller sensor coverage of the digital Nikons. Any AF lens can be used as a manual by just switching off the AF on the camera body and lens.

For distance, I like the older 75-300mm as it's solid metal and sharper than most anything else out there.

Here's a good source to read.

I'd start with the 50mm f/1.8 lens. The N80 is an autofocus camera, so I would get the AF lens. You can always focus it manually if you want.

You can find this lens new for around $100 usd. Try www.bhphoto.com.

Have fun in your photography class!
