There is alot of prejudice in this world. Don't listen to them. Unless your puppy is the direct descendant of two fighting dogs and is brought up in this environment, I wouldn't worry. If you don't raise your dog to be nasty, it won't be nasty. Early socialization of the pup is a sure way to get a great dog. Make sure the breeder you are buying from is doing this. Then it is your job to continue. Most mistakes are made when people isolate their puppies to the back yard or house and don't take them for walks and allow them to experience the world. I have known some rotts who were the biggest lap dogs I have ever seen and wonderful with children. One even lived by a grade school and sat in the front yard watching the kids go by on their way home without moving or getting up. He just liked to watch. Your dog is what you make of it!

I have had 2 well bred Rotties and they were the sweetest dogs. My last one went to nursing homes and had several titles. He was very stable and even tho he had been Schutzhund and personal protection trained never bit anyone. Do not get a pup until it is 8 weeks old, they learn alot from littermates until that age. Socialize the dog, take her to puppy kindergarten class, spay her by 6 mos and take her to a doggy daycare once in awhile. Obed.training is the best way to keep control of a dog and you can start at 8 weeks with short sessions. Use the No Free Lunch method. Any breed/dog can be nasty, the worst bite I got was from a Collie and we had several Labs and Goldens in the shelter as biters. Temperament is inheirited so make sure the parents are friendly. They should have OFA papers that show their hips and elbows are certified free of hip displaysia. They should be titled and temperament tested too. Bad hips and poor conformation can cause pain which makes the dog snap. Rotties, like many breeds, tend to be dominate so you have to be Alpha or they will take over.

If you are good, kind, and not 'nasty,' it stands to reason that she won't be nasty either. Just don't use corporal (hitting) punishment, and don't yell at her. Socialize her, give her lots of attention, crate train her, and you'll have a wonderful pet. They used to be used as 'cart dogs' pulling and delivering milk in Holland. Great with children. Then years ago someone made the movie, "Fury," or something like that. A rottie was used as the vicious dog, and since then people have used them in that manner. If you know the breeder's, and that they are reputable and breed the dog for it's sweetness and devotion, I know you'll have a great pet.

Dear Leanne,
I'm no expert but no matter how you raise the rotti pup there will always be a chance that she will turn cross. It is in the breed itself. for example:,have you ever heard of a Labrador or golden retriever attacking a human..no matter how they're treated? I haven't. One thing in your favour is that its female and won't have the breeding drive of a male. I am nervous with that breed when children are around.
The answers you've received are good and raise her with love, kindness, and firmness. If there are children around you now try to raise the pup around them and teach the children too, to be kind to the pup. (some kids have a tendency to be mean to a dog..you don't want her, as a pup, to fear children for when she is grown she will strike back)
Love and kindness will raise a good dog.
best to you and your pup

Actually the woman who had a face transplant because she was attacked by a dog was attacted by a lab......
Seriously the best two pieces of advise is: 1) get a pup from a reputable breeder who pay attention to temperment 2) take the pup to a good obedience class (your vet probebly will have a reference list of good trainers) I would recomend the obedience class to ANY novice owner of any breed

my Rottweiler is 12 now ,i got him when he was 8 weeks old. he is the best dog i ever had ! i took him for obedience classes. not once did he get aggressive with me,or anyone else. treat your dog with respect & lots of love. they are working dogs.they are very eager to please you.that's why it's good to take them, for obedience training. my dog is very smart.and he still wants to learn new tricks. he crawls and follows commands ,that i make using hand gestures. if you have to correct your dog, never hit her use a firm voice instead.NOT ALL ROTTWEILERS are BAD DOGS !! it's how they are brought up and treated !! they need lots of attention. i hope you will still get your puppy?? rottweilers are very loyal dogs.i love mine to pieces &i wish he was a puppy again.make sure you have time to spend with her.socialize her with people &other dogs. also buy a book about rottweilers.it tells you everything you need to know about them. i hope this answered your question ??

love love LOVE and SOCIALIZE her with children, other dogs and people besides family members. Also get her used to touching ,touch her when shes eating and her paws so shes used to it and then that way she wont snap in the future and get her used to wierd noises so shes not startled when older.
i know some people who hit there dogs when they dont listen..that could definelty make them aggressive so NEVER hit the dog only reward when good.

Don't listen to them!! When you get the dog make sure that if she does to something wrong you put a stop to it straight away. Hitting/kicking a dog is not the way to do it !! It will take time for her to understand whats right and whats wrong but if you explain it to her she will turn out to be the dog of yours dreams. Hope all goes well!!

your best bet is to get a rottie from a VERY VERY reputable breeder,,, one that breeds for conformation AND temperament.... you should see both parents,, you should go to the breeders many times before acquiring the new pup etc. you should ask to get references from previous puppy buyers from this breeder etc.... DON'T just buy a puppy from some backyard breeder.
