I think construction engineering is constantly on the lookout for alternatives that are not only easier to work with, but more consumer friendly. Steel for high rise buildings will never be replaced. There just isn't anything to replace it with. The same goes for ship building and automobile frames. In some instances steel will never be replaced, we have so much scrap steel they might as well put it to good use.
PS I myself am not an engineer, but common sense and logic are granny friendly.

What type of construction, we have thousands of construction materials besides steel that are viable for tons of construction purposes. Aluminum, titanium, iron, wood, composite resins, carbon fibers, plastics, wood, to name a few. Nano-tubes are also up and coming and will be the next generation of super-strength materials.
