About 10% of Americans are explicitly and openly atheist. Many Christians (and probably members of other faiths) are only nominally so, in the sense that it forms part of their background but isn't a vital and central part of their life. In other words, a lot of people believe in God only because - and only to the extent - that they were raised in an environment where that was an assumed fact.

Who conducted the poll?
It sounds seriously wrong to me. It also suggests that it used a very low number of people.
quoting polls is meaningless unless you give the facts about it such as who did it, how many people were polled, where was it conducted (not country but locations - bible belt would slew it badly), and it is important that those conducting it have the right qualifications to interpret data.
Whilst America has a number of religions many people do not worship at all so it would be important to question if they are practising their religion.
Calling yourself Christian is not the same as being a Christian!!!

Only 10% admit, I think.
I know a ton of people, young people especially, who are afraid to admit they are atheists due to societal pressure.

Those things are anonymous, aren't they? Perhaps people don't claim it more often because deep inside they are really just pessimistic agnostics.
