there IS internet access on board ships, it's just limited and certain websites are banned, like open source mail (yahoo, hotmail, etc) and sites like myspace, youtube and facebook(they eat up too much bandwidth)

additionally, they may only be a couple of computers that are non secured, meaning that you can access the internet on them. so the waiting time could be a while.

Bringing a laptop is only advisable if you KNOW you will be able to lock it up in your coffin locker.

Who told you internet access was not available? I agree with others that there IS access to the internet.

Unless some things have changed, there are even college professors that go to sea and teach courses. They are acreditted courses and they only cost you time in filling out required paperwork.

You can take online classes as well. You have access to Navy Knowledge Online (NKO) courses, online courses, correspondence courses, DANTES, etc. Just because you go to sea does not mean ALL comms with land is severed. The ony courses you can't take is regular campus courses where you are required to sit in a desk inside a classroom. Other than those types of courses, your options are still open for the rest.

Good luck shipmate!! GO NAVY!!!!

There is internet access, limited to unclassified communication, unless official business. Everyone should get access, from the yourname@yourcommand.navy.mil identity you will be given. If you are not accommodated by a call to your family and getting internet access immediately, let me know; I would also want to know the name and email address of your Command Master Chief.

I am a veteran of over 24 years, and am a Master Chief, myself. Let me know if I can help you out in the fantastic voyage that you are beginning.

I would assume that it is a security issue. I would understand completely if laptop use would be completely monitored or prohibited on warships, it might serve as a means for mutiny or surprise attack from other forces if certain information was leaked.
