Why would a cop ask for a passengers ID? I got pulled over about an hour ago (it was at like 11:15pm) and the cop asked my friend for their ID. I'm 17 years old, have had my license for almost a year and a half, and I'm pretty sure the oregon law doesnt have any more time restrictions on me, so i'm just curious if anyone knows why the cop asked my friend for their ID...

I also have to add on, I'm really thankful for having that cop pull me over instead of another one cus he was really nice and funny. When I told him i was house sitting for my pastor and i was given permission to use his wife's car the officer laughed and asked me if there were any weapons in the car. he was a cool guy. its a shame i couldnt catch his name, he said it really fast when he introduced himself.

I do that on every traffic stop if there happens to be a passenger in the car. I ask for a name and THEN ask for ID to verify that I'm not being lied to. I also ask about everyone in the car to get a general feeling about the tension level inside. Is anyone generally more nervous about being stopped than on an average stop? This might be a little off the point, but a few years ago a state trooper did a check on a couple that were parked and apparently having consensual sex. The trooper only spoke with the driver (a male) who assured them that they would be moving on immediately. He failed to speak to the female passenger who later turned up raped and in a coma from the severe beating she'd received. The driver had told the passenger that if she made a sound, he'd kill her right in front of the trooper. That's another reason I ask about everyone inside.

This has happened to me before. My situation which I found out after a long long really long discussion with the officer was this. There had been teenagers in the area slipping into this new subdivision where houses were being built but no one lived yet. They were parking in the dark and drinking and doing drugs and other "stuff" I was out with my friends and we decided to look at the new subdivision. When I turned into the subdivision a car turned in behind me so I was blocked from turning around. I drove to the end of the road and there were 10 or so cop cars who immediately turned on their lights. The reason he took everyone's ID was to run Warrant checks. If you have a warrant out and they run your license you will be found by license number or by name. He was just making sure none of us had a record or a warrant before he let us go. It was all a big misunderstanding that we laugh about now.

The passenger was checked for possible warrants. Age is not a factor. The passenger could very well have been entered as a missing person or a juvenile runaway. The officer was doing his job. You never know what or who your going to encounter.

You got stopped because you broke the law. Your passenger's identification was checked as a routine, it did not matter your age. Had you any drugs or alcohol on either party you would have been apprehended into custody. You handled it as good as you could since you cooperated, but you can still have more charges added to your ticket if they come up with something, so just appear on time and see about hiring a lawyer. You won't want the charge against your insurance carrier.

sure it does not take place very in lots of cases yet whilst a police officer is suspicious of sumthing that the passenger might b to blame of then he can and could maximum actual ask the passenger 4 something.

I would guess that he was checking to make sure your passenger was not wanted on any warrants. It is common practice, at least here, to check everyone in the vehicle. You don't demand their ID you ask them for it and if they give it to you, you run them for wants and warrants. Judges issue warrants, it is Law Enforcements job to serve them. Hope this helps.

Based on what I've heard, you and your passenger can both get tickets if you do anything against the law. It's not only based on the driver anymore. Let's say your passenger doesn't wear a seat belt, that means, he will get a ticket, and you will get a ticket. But of course, if they're over 16 then the law applies. I think that's why. Cops are stupid though. I hope you didn't get in trouble. =) Careful driving.

i live in oregon and they do it all the time, especially to younger people, to check age, if they have a warrant, its just a way to run peoples names just in case they come across someone they want, and its not against the law, a cop can ask for your ID whenever they want
