Generally they are detained until they can be put back on the airplane and deported. They are treated reasonably well and fed and housed (jail) until they leave. They are responsible for the cost of their return ticket. not a good thing these days. Personal possessions are not confiscated unless they have something on the proscribed list.

Edit:
If this is a Visa problem? The airline should have checked for the proper Visa before allowing the person to board. Then they are responsible for the cost of the return ticket and are fined by U.S. immigration.

Any passenger denied entry into any country (including the US) are housed in a special detention centre, which is somewhat like a jail. They are deported on the first available flight to their home country, usually at the expense of the carrier that flew them in. The airline that brought them is charged a stiff fine. Food etc is provided in the deportation centre and the detainee is kept only till the deportation procedures are completed.

They are usually put on the first flight back. Their belongings are sent back with them. If they request drink or food it is brought to them.
