I know it is Microsoft Encarta

Encarta is Microsofts encyclopedia. You might be able to download a trial version off the microsoft website, but in order to view the full tihng you need to order the cd

I think you mean Microsoft Encarta.
It is an electronic encyclopedia that can be updated on-line. You buy it as software but it is not expensive. (I don't remember what I paid for mine, but it has been well worth it.)
I don't know if it can be downloaded or not, but I suspect it couldn't be downloaded legally. You could probably buy it at either Wal-Mart or Best Buy or any other well-stocked store that carries software.
I conside it one of the best software acquisitions I have made and I use it frequently.
