I enlisted in the navy as a gunners mate (because I did not yet take the DLAP for CTI) my ship out date is in may....I was sworn in the day I picked my job. However I heard that what recruiters left out that until the second week of boot camp you can terminate your contract with no repurcussions...is this true or not? Wherecan more info be found? I want to know this in case I want to delay my entry further..to finish college or if I can't get the job i want

You can back out at any time during Delayed Entry.

Once you ship out for boot camp you're in the navy and they'll make it murder on you if you tell them you want out.

I believe you are allowed to spend no more than one year in Delayed Entry.

Look ether you want to go in the navy or not! Until you get sworn in the second time the day you ship you can get out or released with out any consequences. Once you take the oath for the second time and your on your way to boot camp its ON you are a member of Uncle Sam's navy so yea its pretty ez to get out early in boot camp but NOT with out consequences. So everyone a favor esp yourself if you HAVE any reservations tell your recruiter NOW and then do not show up for your shipping date. I was a recruiter and I could never figure out why people like you would just want to waste my time, You maybe a good guy but you sound like you want something for nothing. Now if you wanted to finish school than why even bother to enlist?

Unfortunately this information about being able to quit bootcamp is false.

Once you have signed your contract and swore in (whether you shipped out right away or not) you are bound by the terms of your contract.

The only way you can be released from the contract is if one of a couple of things happen: THEY BREECH or VIOLATE THE TERMS OF THE CONTRACT (on any level that you deem important), YOU WERE A MINOR WHEN YOU SIGNED THE CONTRACT, or BOTH PARTIES AGREE TO DISSOLVE THE CONTRACT - OR - you wash out of boot camp.

But reality is that the military is NOT a bad place to be, especially the Navy right now. You signed up to be a GUNNER'S MATE - you get to choose from there what kind of guns you want to work with or get trained on. My advice to you is simple: go to boot camp - do the BEST you can do, keep your head down, your mouth shut and SOAK UP EVERYTHING you can (because they teach you a TON of stuff in boot camp). THEN go to your "A" school (and if Gunners have a "C" school then go there too. In basic, when they ask you where you would like to be stationed, choose three major areas that you are interested in - don't be afraid if you get a ship out of school - use that ship time to get your Surface Warfare designation. Ask the more senior enlisted in your rate what were the key things that they remember on their E4 exams that you would need to focus on - and don't be afraid to work hard.

I guarantee if you show yourself to be a stand up guy (or girl if you're a girl), the Navy will bring you fond memories, and you will take more out of it then you put into it. Oh yeah, AND SIGN UP FOR THE G.I. BILL - IT'S WORTH EVERY PENNY!

One more thing to remember: N A V Y = Never Again Volunteer Yourself. Anchors Aweigh!

That was from poster "DISCOUNT ATTIC"

Anybody even thinking about joining military would do well to register on
http://www.military.com
tons of info and real live military people.
Some of them might break your balls a bit.
But a good number of the people are glad to help.

It does you no good and it does the military no good to have people entering military with false information.

The recruiters are not conspiratorial and withholding info from you.

good luck

If you are thinking you want to delay to go to college you should have thought of that before you went to MEPS. If you're worried about not getting the job you want you should have joined the Army. You can pick your own job with them.
