Your situation is terrible and I hope you can find justice.

There is a slight possibility that you can.

However, there are several key elements.

Are you over 18 or old enough to file suit in your own state?

What are you state statute of limitations regarding the matter?

What evidence do you have to declare a case?

Being married to an attorney I can tell you that the very first thing you need to do is identify a reputable attorney and contact them immediately because if the statute of limitations expires there will be absolutely nothing you can do.

I can tell you that this suit would require you to "follow the money" If the missionary is not wealthy or does not have insurance that would pay the claim then you have almost zero chance of suing because an attorney will not take a case to get nothing for free. Of course, if you are wealthy there are many many options for you to "punish" the guy and those methods would be perfectly legal.

There is one other possibility, and that is to include his church in the suit and show that they share in the responsibility for his actions. These churches often have deep pockets and will fight very dirty.

This type of action will be a huge burden and drain on you and your family. You will be painted as a villain for attacking a man of faith. You need to discuss this very seriously with your family first.

Good luck.

If you are serious then consider contacting your local chapter of Americans United for the Seperation of Church & State. HTTP://WWW.AU.ORG they have excellent and reputable attorneys. If they can't help they will most likely know someone that can. You might also consider contactacting your local ACLU Chapter for referrals.

First off, I'm not familiar with all the specifics on this case, so I can't give a more specific response. Secondly, I'm sorry for the loss of your mother. I'm sure you loved her and miss her. At this difficult time I have to have you sincerely search your heart - are you using the missionary as a convient scape goat?

You said that this missionary lied to your mom, and that this lie led to your parents' divorce, and your mom's suicide; what was the lie? What lie is so terrible that it removes all burden of reaction from the person who committs suicide?

I'm all for that individual missionary being held responsible for his part in this tragedy, once that role is established.

It was, I am sorry to say, more her fault than his. She did a series of stupid things from the sound of it. The missionary owed nothing to her or your family. Sorry.

Tell your story to your biship of your ward. If you are not LDS and do not know, call the local church. They can get you in touch with the bishop of your area.

I've seen this question here before.

Try forgiving them and moving on.
