My friends dog has had some scabbing around the eyes and has been listless. Today it was angry with other dogs and frothing at the mouth. He thinks it has rabbies.

You don't cure rabies, the only cure is death. Sorry to tell ya. If your friend had the dog vaccinated for rabies then it should be OK. I would think its something other than that.
If no vaccinations were done, and the dog is fighting with other dogs and biting then it is infecting those animals with rabies. The cure for them is death as well. Also if it bite you or its saliva gets into a cut or wound then you get rabies and guess what? If you don't get immediate medical attentions then you die too. best tell your friend to take that dog immediately to a Vet and get it checked out NOW.
Frothing at the mouth is not always i sign of rabies, the sure sign is to be sure the dog is drinking water, if it totally refuses water then you have to really really worry about rabies. Rabies is a brain disease, and once a animal gets it, it messes with the central nervous system and the deductive reasoning parts of the brain. Most rabie infected animals are Hydrophobic, meaning they are afraid of water, they will not drink and in turn they get frothy mouths because they are thirsty.
Backwoods Vietnam? You live so far in the woods that you cant get to a vet but you have the internet? Intresting its still fatal and needs to be delt with..

Hey Jay45 nice concise answer, if being totally rude and unhelpful is what people want on Q&A. What you don't know is that the animal in question is in the outback in Vietnam. There are no vets to take it to and thats why we are asking the question. First time my friend is on questions and answers and he has sombody calling him a moron who doesn't even know whats going on. Who is the Moron? We are just looking for some information here so we can make an educated guess. And yes we have been to the web sites and realize that there is no cure for rabies. So all we can do is observe and get ready to go to the hospital tomorrow for our shots. just in case. Thanks to everyone else for trying to be helpful. Thats what we are all here for. Bad enough when an animal you love is in pain without negative crap from an unthinking individual.

Rabies is always fatal in dogs.If your friend thinks his dog has Rabies, then he had better call animal control and the Health department right away,so the dog can be quarantined, and the owner and other people and animals that came in contact with the dog can start on anti -rabies vaccinations,if warranted.Rabies is easily prevented by a very inexpensive vaccine, administered every one to three years to cats, dogs and other mammals.

The only known case of rabies survival was a girl who was placed on artificial respiration and who suffered a coma for 3 months while the virus ran its course. She is now permanently retarded.

Rabies causes ascending paralysis, and once the symptoms begin, it is too late to actually stop the illness.

You don't cure rabies, it is ALWAYS fatal, 100% of the time. You need to have the dog checked ASAP. It's not common, but it is deadly serious. It can kill people too, and it's a horrible death. If you suspect rabies, don't screw around, get your *** to the vet.

Rabies is very common in Vietnam, I hope you went to the hospital!

The only way they can "check" a dog for rabies is by decapatating it. They will examine the brain tissue. If it tests positive, everyone who has been exposed to the dog will have to be treated for rabies. Other animals will need to be euthanized as well.

First, a dog must be properly diagnosed by a veterinarian. If the dog is not too far gone, it might be saved, Otherwise, the Public Health laws would cause the dog to be put down.
