The dog is a welsh corgi mix, her name is Dior and she is potty trained but just has the urge to pee and poop on my GF's bed. Even after so much punishment she has gotten for it, and being caught in the act of doing it, she still does it. What is the deal?

She needs to be put outside when she's done that and left for a good bit to learn a lesson. Also, go and get some Bitter Apple spray and spray the entire bed. They hate that smell.

Cory B is spot on, I don't know why she got a thumbs down! I reckon this is a behavioural issue, although Dior should get a check up at the vet incase there is a medical prob. I think Dior is marking the bed as her own, in her mind sleeping on the bed is a privilege only available to the most important person in the house. She thinks that's her and you and your gf sleeping there also just an insult to her. She is telling you this in the only way she knows how. I would change the mattress to rid the bed of her scent and wash all bedding in bio powder. Stop her from getting in the bedroom for the time being so she can "reclaim" the bed. Try reading Jan Fennel's The Dog Whisperer for tips on how to readjust Diors position within the household, it should teach her a little respect WITHOUT the need for any punishment. In Diors mind when you punish her you are disrespecting her, I doubt she pays the blindest bit of attention to it. Stop punishing her, it's not doing any good is it? Try restricting her from the sofa and chairs for a while, if she has access to food and toys all the time, restrict her access and feed her after you have eaten. Give her only a couple of toys but those she likes best keep them in a cupboard and have constructive play time every day with her and these toys but shut them away at the end of it again. This may help "readjust" her attitude to you and show her how to respect you.

All the very best.

It's disrespect. And dominance. Apparently your g/f is not the leader. Does the dog pull her down the street on walks? Growl or bark at her when she wants something, race out the door in front of her? These are all signs of dominance. The dog thinks she's the pack leader. The dog needs some rules put down and for everyone to enforce them. Keep her off the bed, couch, and other furniture. Give her her own bed and make her sleep there. Even if it's in the bedroom. Also, the pee has probably soaked into the mattress enough, that the dog can smell it and continues to pee there. Keep the bedroom off limits, and keep the dog crated while you guys are gone. Always take her out to pee and poop at the same times every day...

Good Luck.

Hello there :) I have a couple of ideas and suggestions that may help you guys get to the bottom of this issue-

First and foremost, it would be good to take Dior to her vet for a routine checkup, to rule out any physical problems. ANY drastic change in your pet's behavior or routine can be caused by disease, and it would be just cruel to discipline an animal for being ill.

After ruling out sickness comes the detective work - Dior obviously thinks that eliminating on your girlfriend's bed is a great idea... and it is your girlfriend's responsibility as a pet owner to find out why.

As far as discipline goes, there is such thing as too much and too harsh. Would you spank a potty-trained child who has wet the bed or had an accident? Or, would you respond with love, compassion and patience in order to give that child some much needed encouragement and confidence? Try this instead - when Dior is sniffing around and looking as though she might "go" where she shouldn't, just say "NO!" in a low voice, similar to a dog's growl. IMMEDIATELY take her outside (on a leash preferably) to her potty spot, and praise her like crazy when she "goes". If she doesn't potty within 5 or so minutes, or if it seems like she wants to play instead, take her back inside and WATCH HER. Do not engage in play, and DO NOT let her back up on the bed, because those are both rewards in Dior's mind. When she goes where and when she's supposed to, THEN she can be rewarded :)

I really hope you are reading this, because this next part is so important... People beds are dogs' most prized reward. It is a privelege for a dog to share sleeping space for his master, and as it should be!! Dior should be allowed up there ONLY after she has been invited up there, and only when your girlfriend is also up there with her. Likewise, when your girlfriend gets off the bed, Dior must be told to get down BEFORE hand.

Some dogs pee on things to show ownership and mark them as theirs. If Dior is feeling as though her position in the home is being challenged, she could be peeing on her bed to "remind" your girlfriend that no, it's Ms. Dior who rules the roost.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not discount the issue of status just because Dior is such a cute, little doggie. Corgis were bred to herd sheep, to be the "boss" of them. What is a smelly pain in the butt right now could turn into growls, bites, and aggressiveness later.

EDIT- Why a thumbs down, I wonder?? In fact I noticed a couple of good answers to this getting thumbs down as well. Is it because our answers aren't simple and easy? I sure hope not, because there is nothing simple or easy about being responsible for the well-being of a pet, or a child for that matter!!!!

, I don't think punishment is the answer as she doesn't really know why she is being punished, perhaps she is jealous and the she is marking her territory, shut her out of the bedroom and re train her to go where she should, the more you get angry with her the more nervous she will get and that will make her keep peeing where she shouldn't

This sounds like an outdoor dog to me! I'd never let my dog stay inside if she did that!

Our dog mysteriously peed and pooped in my boys' room, the girls' room and the guest room, and we decided the previous occupants must have had a pet that eliminated in there. But also we realized we just had to have her outside at the right time. What we ended up doing was getting in sync with her eating/drinking and basically had her spend more time outside. When she comes in at night or visits inside during the day she never has accidents now.

Don't allow the dog to sleep on the bed or even go in your gf's room.

When you say punishment, I hope you don't hit and/or scream at her.

If you are new to the situation that could be the reason, but my solution would be that the dog never does in the bedroom until it learns manners.

Just don't let the dog in the bedroom, problem solved. Its a dominance thing.

wash the comforter in biological washing powder then before you put it back on the bed spray it with surgical spirits this should take away any of her pee and poo smells and discourage her from doing it,
