Get a Mac. Their fast, reliable, fun, VERY EASY, i just switched and I wouldn't ever go back not even if they paid me money. Apple makes an awesome computer. Mac is an awesome experience. My computer has never got an virus or crashed and the reason why is because Apple Security knows how to protect your computer. You will never have to worry about viruses. Their is a reason why the Macbook is the top selling computer and top rated on Amazon! Everyone who has a Mac loves Mac everyone who doesn't is jealous and they will trash it!

(Here is some info from Apple's Site)

1. No upgrade nightmares.
Before you can even think about Vista, you’ll likely need a new PC. Or upgrades for memory, hard disk, and graphics card. Why go through all that hassle, when you can just get a Mac? More

2. You can even run Windows.
The Mac gives you choices. With the latest software options, an Intel-powered Mac can easily run Vista or Windows XP applications. Not that you’ll want to... More

3. It’s simpler.
No need to choose from the many (and expensive) flavors of Vista. Every Mac runs the same Mac OS X — with the full set of industry-leading features. More

4. You don’t have to buy new stuff.
Your existing printer, camera, keyboard, and mouse will work with a Mac. PCs and Macs can usually share peripherals if they connect via USB, FireWire, or Bluetooth, three industry standards available on every Mac. More

5. Know iTunes? You know Mac.
You’ll recognize features like the library collection, playlist arrangement, and instant search in many Mac applications. So you’re something of a Mac expert already. More

6. Macs run Microsoft Office.

7. You can take it with you.

I'd say a Mac is better and I have very limited experience with Macs.
But I'd suggest trying Linux on the Windows laptop before buying a new machine.
There are several LiveCD versions that will run from the CD without affecting the system installed on the hard drive.

If you're familiar with Windows, to the point where you know how to play around with the settings, then windows is the platform to continue on. Going from windows to Mac can be a bit of an ordeal. If you're using it general work (internet, email, word processing/office applications) stick with windows. Mac is best suited for graphics applications.

It depends on what you are going to use it for.
Mac's are much more trouble free than Windows based PC,s by a mile.
Both are and can be good.
I own both. I have never had any issue whatsoever with either of my Mac's I wish I could say the same about any of the PC's I have owned.

I personally use a Mac because it is pretty easy to use. It does not come with a manual though. It can also run Word and other windows programs on it.
