Five minuets after the seatbelt sign came on, and 15 minuets before the plane actually landed I realized I had to pee REALLY badly. So when the plane finally landed I hurried out and in the tunnel you take to get from the plane to the inside of the airport a crippled man was walking in front of me, slowly. I said excuse me and went around him. So was it rude to go around him?

I think it depends on the situation.. I'm a caregiver to disabled adults and you would be surprised at how often people ignore me struggling to hold a door open and push a wheelchair through.. Or people that GO AROUND me while I'm trying to get a automatic wheelchair AND a 175 lb. person through a narrow doorway or over a curb... I think in those type of situations where someone could/should open a door or maybe offer assistance then that would be rude.. However in your circumstance it wasn't as long as you didn't push them down or anything like that... It's not about treating a disabled person like everyone else it's about having common manners and courtesy.. I would hold the door open for someone who wasn't disabled, so why should it be any different for someone who is? FYI It really irks me to have ppl let a door slam in my face while I'm pushing someone in a wheelchair, like we're not even there... Good luck

No, surely not. Would you want someone walking behind you breathing down your neck while you held them up? You wouldn't expect the world stop because of you, and to have you hanging patiently in the background would be patronizing. Treat them the same as you would anyone else; politely go around and toss out an "excuse me" if necessary. If a handicapped person takes offense to being treated equally, then that person has issues.

No of course not. You needed to go so you did the most appropriate thing. If it was an old person walking slowly, or a parent with a child walking slowly, I'm sure you would have done the same thing.

No, it is not rude to go around a person who is handicapped. As long as you excuse yourself in a nice manner. In fact they rather have you go around them. Then they don't feel like they are holding you up and in your way.

I don't think so...unless he was headed for the bathroom and you took the handicapped stall. People are in a rush all the time in airports, so he probably thought nothing of it.

Hell, just because they're handicapped doesn't mean they have to be in my way! I don't think they have any illusions about being a little slower than everyone else and I really believe most of them want to be treated like everyone else -- which means we GO AROUND them.

It depends on how you said excuse me. If you sounded impatient then some people will take offense to it but if you said it nicely, then he may not have been offended. But generally it is considered rude.

No. Most handicapped people seem to want to be treated like everyone else. Which is exactly what you did.
