It varies from wedding to wedding. I put together a wedding with 18 bridesmaids and 18 groomsmen (including the maid of honor and best man).
How ever many you have is fine. Just make sure there are the same amount of groomsmen as are bridesmaids. The groomsmen escort the bridesmaids down the aisle.

There can be as many or as few as you want, as long as you have some criteria for choosing groomsmen. For example, my fiance chose family members and friends who have been especially significant in his past life, are still friends with him today, and will most likely be his friends for a very long time. As far as having an equal amount of groomsmen as bridesmaids, I think it's more important that you have people in your wedding party who are really close to you, even if you or your significant other has more people on his/her side than the other person.

There's no set rule. The groom chooses the people (usually men, but if he's got a woman or two he's particularly close to, he may decide to honor them this way, too) he's closest to, just as the bride chooses her closests friends and family members to attend her.
How many? Some people choose not to even bother with formal attendants. Others can't cut the list down below ten. Some even have gone well into double-digits, though that's pretty rare.
I've been to weddings where there were no attendants at all, and ones where there were eight on a side, and ones where one side had three and the other just one. Oh, and one couple I know nearly came to blows over which was going to have my brother as honor attendant. They finally decided to share him as the only attendant on both sides.
Most commonly, I've seen something in the range of three to five attendants on each side and matching numbers, but as I say, this is one of those things where there is no right or wrong. There's just what works for the couple involved.

Average I would say 4 or 5 but there really isn't a "normal" number anymore
My HTB and I each have two bridal party memebers. I did a wedding last week and the bride had 10 attendants....I thought it was ridiculous but she didn't. I suppose with over 300 guests 10 people in the bridal party isn't that much. It's all a matter of personal prefrence.

the past few years I've seen people doing anywhere from none to like over 20 depending on what they want and can afford. back years ago I think it was typical to have a best man and 2 groomsmen...so 3 in total. thats what my parents and cousins had and what I've seen in a lot of older wedding photos.

As far as this is concerned, there's no such thing as "normally". The bride and groom can have as few or as many as they want.
In most cases, there are an equal number of groomsmen and bridesmaids.

The same as the number of bridesmaids. The bride usually chooses that.

In my wedding, there will be 0, same as the number of bridesmaids. FWIW, at weddings I've attended, it's been most common to have none or three.
