Considering the current events in history, would you join the military? If so, what branch and why.

I don't think current events should be the deciding factor that one should use to decide if the military is right for them. Military service is a career choice and if it's right for you, then you should join.

Current events don't mean much when it comes to choosing to serve one's country. I too joined during the Iran Hostage crisis. I served through many other minor and major conflicts and under worse presidents over the next two decades. I would do so again.

If it were possible to go back in time or to magically turn 18 again I would probably join the Marines instead of the Navy. I had a brief stint with Marine security once and liked the lifestyle. I stomped around the California Desert instead of bobbing around the ocean. I shot several weapons regularly instead of cleaning an engineroom. And I got to wear cammies instead of prison blues.

For some of us, there is no danger great enough, no political point serious enough to deter us from defending our freedoms. For those who answer no, that's okay, REAL Men are covering for you now even as I did in my day.

I was a member of the US Army once already in the early 80s. Yes I would join the Army again. I think this time I would want to be a sniper. Its just that I am too old now and I am also a single parent. The first time I was in I was 13 Bravo. The King of Battle.

Yes.
I was sponsored into the US of A in 1966 by "Uncle Sam". I would probably attempt to change the service/category than
that of the past.
I think that I would attempt to join the Marines, or the Army and try out for SF.
What has changed my mind? I guess that I have seen too many people join up in order to get the "Freebies" but not accept the responsibility for raising their hand for the oath. That tells me that anybody who reneges on a solemn oath, will renege on their oaths/promises in the future. I have more self-esteem than that!

Well, yes I would. I'm already in though. I would join either the Navy or the Air Force. You could still wind up in Iraq or Afghanistan, but not as long as Army and Marines. Navy would be the least likely to spend time there, but they are going there though.

I like the Navy because we are usually at or near the coast. Air Force and Army are more likely to be inland, and sometimes those places are pretty remote. While assigned to the Navy I've been stationed in San Diego CA, Monterey CA, Norfolk VA, Keflavik Iceland, Bremerton WA, and currently in PA. On ships I've been to Vancouver, BC, Victoria BC, Portland OR, San Francisco CA, Anchorage AK, Adak AK, Sasebo, Yokosuka, Chinhae Korea, Pusan Korea, Honolulu, Mazatlan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Halifax Nova Scotia, Portsmouth UK, Plymouth UK, Faslane Scotland, Oslo Norway, Gibraltar, Souda Bay Crete, Augusta Bay, Sicily. Recently they sent me to Afghanistan, so I saw some other places as well...

Navy is the way to go!

I wouldn't join these days, for obvious reasons. I was in the Army near the end of the Cold War. It was safe because neither the U.S. or the Soviets really wanted to go to war for fear of the consequences (destruction of the world). I was in a helicopter unit, and we were treated better than the soldiers say, in the infantry or artillery (not to be derogatory). Overall, I had a lot of fun and had more free time than I now do with a civilian job.

Joined the Army right before graduation, will be shipping to boot in a few days. Serving my country, not making my parents pay for MY college education. Dont want to get stuck in some boring office job.

Yes, Army National Guard in Military Intelligence. All my brothers are in, might as well give dad the full set. He was in WWII and Vietnam. Besides, when I'm asked "What did I do during the war?" I won't have to say, "I shoveled crap" to paraphrase Patton.

Yes. I joined the Air Force because they are the only branch to offer a 100% tuition assistance while you are in. Book fee's, tuition, lab fee's, everything....they covered it. The medical benefits are the best out there. No possibility of getting laid off. You get to travel...mostly for free! I was a nuclear weapons technician in Montana. I had a very admirable job and my parents were very proud of me. I had the time of my life!!

Yeah. If I were to join, I would join the Air Force. I don't really know why, but this past year or so, I have just felt really motivated to join the Air Force. I am really not sure why though.
