Twice as many Championships then any current driver, more career wins then any current driver and he's tied for most wins this year as well as leading the points by a large margin.

Because he has been the most consistent driver this year. Look at the wins, top 5's & top 10's. People say that Jr is the best driver in NASCAR, where is the proof in that? Even if you hate Jeff, what other driver has been as consistent. You must be a Jr fan who also hasn't won a championship before or after the chase.

One of the years that they first implemented the Chase, Gordon should have won one of those championships and would hav without the format. He is having an impecable season right now and has a huge points lead which will be deminished down to nothing and followed by and 20 to 30 point lead. One of the Chase's was lost by 8 points, and I think Kurt Busch won over Jimmie Johnson that year. Go Gordon!!!! Drive for Five is Alive.

Honestly, I don't say that. I don't say any particular driver is the BEST. Overall, I think Stewart is a better driver than Gordon. Could Gordon drive a F1 car? No offense to Gordon or his fans, just making a point. But I look at who is currently in the top 10-12 and say, those are your better drivers. I'm not gonna single out one person. There are too many great drivers out there.

1) 79 wins....way out in front of his nearest active competitor.
2) 4 wins this year.
3) 4 cups. The chase is irrelevant. A win is a win and a title is a title. You don't rack up that many if you cheat, or if you're just lucky.
4) Watch enough races and you'll see he's a thinking man's driver. It's cool to watch him and his crew chief strategize.
5) by the same token, he has a little of Earnhardt Sr.'s mean streak. He once rubbed Rusty Wallace out of the way to win. I don't like that.....but he fights (so much for that limp wristed stuff).

Because he is the most consistent winner in the sport over the last 15 years. He has been racing for 15 years and has 79 wins that's an average of 5 plus wins a year so i would have to agree with the people who say he is the best current driver.

Because they have the right too say it, given to them by the freedom of speech, just as you have the right to come on here and ask the question.
Even David B up there has the right to look like an idiot and answer as dumb as he did.

Plus look at the stats compared to everyone else active, the chase has nothing to do with it.

Like someone saying Dan Marino can't be considered one of the greatest all time, because he didn't win a superbowl.

Why do you say he's not?
