Yes you can. It's actually pretty common to do so. The hard part is distilling the fermented wash into ethanol...both to actually do it, and to get the necessary permits.

However, if you are making it for fuel, the permit is fairly easy, and free.

You can ferment something to about 10% ethyl alcohol. That's about it.
Ethanol is a 10 step process requiring a lot of specialized equipment not the least of which is a column still. Without federal permits you cannot distill anything. Take a look at the process and then ask yourself if you need to worry about grocery store yeast:

It is best to purchase a yeast that has bee selected for its ability to survive in higher alcohol content than an ordinary bread yeast. This will dramatically improve alcohol yields. If you are looking to consume the alcohol then select a good wine yeast.
