This may be more in depth than you wanted, but there is something called the marriage gradient in psychology. It is the tendency of men to marry "down" and women to marry "up" in terms of things like age, social class, education, and even height. Women prefer older men, taller men, men who have more money than them and so on. Men tend to date and marry younger women, shorter women, and so on.
At the ages you mentioned, two years can make a lot of difference in maturity and experience, so more than 2 years is probably not a good idea.
Interesting fact though, the average man will marry a woman 3 years younger than himself.

When you are that young, there is a big difference in level of growth and maturity between a 17 year old versus a 14 year old. The 17 year old is about to finish high school, currently dating heavily, and is able to drive a motor vehicle in some states. A 14 year old on the other hand is more likely beginning high school, barely able to get into PG-13 movies and is still in the beginning stages of puberty.

It is just because that is how mature they are. It is kind of weird for an 18 year old to be dating a 14 year old, because it can be considered rape if they have sex.

If you are over 18, age doesn't matter. If you are under, age does because 17 and under are still children and dating someone like 3 years older than them is just wrong.

Because most women prefer guys older than them. But I've never heard about this 'rule'. I would say don't break any laws when you date someone and beyond that don't worry too much about it.

Perhaps, men are little more childish and would prefer younger women to hang out with.

I don't know about you... but some of us guys feel paranoid if a girl is older than them, feeling that he's not the "Man of the house" or something.

Speaking as an older man, it's a HUGE ego boost if you land a gf younger than you. (Older as in 40, my last gf was 29)
