Because it takes time to learn the language & it takes time to acclimate to a new environment. The Italians didn't come here immediately speaking English. Most of our past immigrants (except those for which English was their native language) came here already knowing English. Yet, we expect that from Hispanics. We mistakenly assume if they don't learn immediately that they don't want to learn. First of all, most Hispanics I know work so hard & so many hours here it doesn't leave a lot of leisure time for them to learn a new language. Second, we all know that the older a person is the harder it is for him/her to learn a new language. No one wants to hear the argument that 75% of Hispanics speak English in 10 years because it blows to pieces the argument that Hispanics don't want to assimilate. For most Americans common sense just isn't used at all in the expectation that a Hispanic who comes here today should be speaking fluent English tomorrow.

The few hispanics that come over here legally probably do want to learn English and assimilate into our society. The millions that cross the border illegally could care less about learning English. You never even see them talking to an American. And their kids only start to learn English when they start school because they only hear Spanish spoken at home. And if you're here for over 10 years you damn well should speak fluent English!

Having lived in San Antonio and now in El Paso, this is extremely incorrect. Actually, this has been the ONLY group who refuses to learn English.
I have worked with the Spanish speaking population since 1989. Because everything is said or written in Spanish, they see no need to learn. This is not a reflection on the hispanic culture; we should fault America for this.

Please, those figures do not correlate with the facts. I have lived in Miami since 1959, and I know many Hispanics that came in the 1960's and still do not speak English. Saving hello and good bye in English does not count as being able to speak English. I do not know about others cities, but in Miami, speaking Spanish is more important than speaking English

Where I live, there is a program for ELL (english language learners) and they have a LONG waiting list. Latinos here DEFINITELY want to learn the language.

Man, respectfully, i do not understand your Que. or point of it!
Are you making a JOKE or what!!
But i tell you this. No matter what any body says on this subject, there will never be a proper and logical response!
And the reason will be, the high volume of racism, ignorance and arrogance among those kind who think their blood is reacher than the others! which i always resent.

If they are learning English, then why is it wherever you go or whatever you buy there is both English and Spanish on the packages or signs?.....The only time they care about English or the American culture is when it comes to money....

What is your source for that data? My experience is that they are not learning English. Their kids are, but a lot of the immigrants are not.
