I was wondering how someone becomes a missionary. What major should someone choose if they want to be a missionary? Only serious answers please.

And to the person who said we are paid for lying to people, first of all, the Bible isn't a lie. Second, some missionaries are not paid very much. They get money for travel and other expenses, and maybe to make to bring the word of Christ to others.! Have you thought about that? Think about the money some missionaries spend to tell others about Jesus. It isn't lies.

I had seriously considered missionary work but health problems made this impractical. Perhaps the greatest need in missions work today is for teachers to train indigenous ministers. Indigenous ministers tend to be zealous, know the languages needed, and do not need foreign support. Many of them are lacking, however, in any formal training. If you get a good Masters degree in Bible, theology, etc. you will be in demand around the world.
The best way to get to the mission field is through whatever path is laid out in the denomination of one's choice, and these can differ significantly. A person interested in missions work should contact the foreign missions department of the denomination or fellowship of their choice. These missions departments usually require some training in missiology from missionary candidates.
If you are interested in missions I suggest you talk to your pastor; call your organizations missions department and have them mail you all of their pertinent literature; read books about missions history (Ruth Tucker's "From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya" is highly readable if slightly flawed); and read books about missions theology and missiology by authors such as George Peters, Roland Allen, Melvin Hodges, David Hesselgrave, Charles Kraft, and Herbert Kane. Read Ted Ward's book "Living Overseas," as well as the reader, "Perspectives on the World Christian Movement" edited by Winter and Hawthorne. Systematically peruse Johnstone's "Operation World." Pray a lot. Over time you should get a strong indication of whether you should be a missionary and if so, in what capacity. If you do go, know that it is easy to become disillusioned by the imperfections you will find in your own organization's missionary work. Also, over time overseas work loses its luster and some missionaries leave when the stars leave their eyes. If you go, do so with a firm and mature commitment.

O.K., well I speak almost only English, but I have been infused into a Spanish culture.
Because I have studied the BIBLE, nothing else, BUT the BIBLE. i know where all the scriptures are. I can take a bible written in Spanish and find the scripture I need in English to share with my bible students.
These people are eager for bible knowledge, I have only High School Spanish, but vast Bible study knowledge.
YOU WOULD BE AMAZED, How GOD finds the bridge between with prayer, and hard work!

I've thought about becoming a missionary, but I want to make sure that if I go on a mission that I will be going for the right reasons. The type of mission you want to serve depends on your religious affiliation. You could do a service mission, or a proselyting mission, among others. Unless you are going for a degree in Theology then your major doesn't matter. I would advise you to take classes that teach about Christianity and the study of the scriptures. A public speaking class would probably be a good class if you want to go on a proselyting mission. :)
*Oh and on the money bit, member of my church who go on missions do it for free unless they don't have the money to pay for it then they get a scholarship type thing to pay for their expenses.*

The first thing you must do is make sure you are called to be a missionary....If you are not truly called you will suffer under such an extreme sacrifice.

No.
I do wish more Christian missionaries would study anthropology or medicine, though.... save the rest of us the grief of rescuing them from places they should not go because of disease and culture.

Listen to what God is telling you and follow His will.
I think many of the seminary students turned atheists are ones who went into it, not because they were called, but because they thought it would please God or their family.
Listen to what God is telling you.
