I have strep throat. I used both amoxicillin and pennicillin in the past. However, its been a while since the last time I;ve had strep throat. It usually doesn't take long for pennicillin to kick in, but right now I'm on amoxicillin. Ive use amoxicillin before in the past and it has worked. However it seems to be taking forever. This is my fourth day with strep throat and I'm still hurting. I don't remember it taking this long whenever I am prescribed pennicillin.. So again.. The question is... Does amoxicillin take longer to kill a bacteria than pennicillin does?

cowboydoc is wrong. There are no drugs to cure viruses, only some to help your own body to fight them. The only thing that can be done for viruses is to vaccinate against them. Of course, if the virus mutates, you must develop a new vaccine. That is why there is a new flu vaccine every year, and why they are having so much trouble developing an AIDS vaccine. The AIDS virus mutates too quickly and unpredictably.

Both amoxicillin and penicillin are antibiotics and are used for bacterial infections. Amoxicillin is a variation of penicillin, and I think it works for a wider range of bacterial infections. They are both extremely inexpensive - in our area a 10-day regimen costs under $5 - as well as effective, so, unless you are allergic, you will usually be prescribed one of them. Basically, all anti-bacterial drugs are either variations of penicillin or Erythromycin. Erythromycin is somewhat stronger, but also a lot more expensive, so they usually only prescribe it if you are allergic to penicillin or the penicillin-based drugs don't work.

Amoxicillin is a good broad spectrum antibiotic. Broad spectrm means that it is used for many different kinds of infections. Pennicillin is also a good broad spectrum antibiotic. Sometimes one antibiotic will work better over another, depending on the strain of streptoccois. If your throat is not any better by the time you get to the end of you pills, I would call your doctor back. I know that when you are hurting it is hard to be patient. But you have to give the antibiotc a chance to work. Are you taking it four times a day as perscribed? I hope you feel better real soon. Good luck!

I am not sure that there is a difference in how long it takes in this case. However doctors have been saying that over time some people have to switch meds because their body becomes to used to it and starts to become less effective.

Amoxicillin is actually a form of penicillin. Essentially, it is a stronger dose of penicillin, so it will work better than penicillin.

I would definitely talk to your pediatrician about that. It would seem that small doses of any antibiotic might not be a good idea for a baby who doesn't need it.

These are apples and oranges, two different animals. Penicillin is for a virus while amox. is an antibiotic for bacteria infection.
