How many years after FDA approval can a drug's generic equivalent be made?

17 years is an original patent with renewal available. A generic may be produced with different chemical make-up to avoid patent infringement, but it still has to comply to FDA.

Untill the patent runs out or an agreement between the originating pharmaceutical company and the other usually resulting in a large financial exchange for allowances...
