Amoxicillin is a semi-synthetic, moderate spectrum penicillin.

Penicillins may be combined with beta-lactamase inhibitors to increase efficacy against β-lactamase-producing organisms. The addition of the beta-lactamase inhibitor does not generally, in itself, increase the spectrum of the partner penicillin.

Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid
Ampicillin/sulbactam
Ticarcillin/clavulanic acid
Piperacillin/tazobactam

Amoxicillin has a broader spectrum, covering a substantial number of gram negative organisms that aren't covered by penicillin. Penicillin is still a better choice for strep throat and dental abscesses, though.

The drugs are chemically related but have different spectra of coverage. Pen has a narrow spectrum of coverage (gram + bacteria) while amox is a broad spectrum antibiotic (gram + and gram -). There is no specific "strong " or "weak" antibiotic, just drugs with different spectra of coverage. Narrow spectrum antibiotics are best when you know the specific organism..it will have less side effects. A broad spectrum antibiotic will kill more types of bacteria but may produce unpleasant side effects such as diarrhea, yeast infection, etc by killing normal resident bacteria in the gut or vagina. When treating infection, you want to treat the specific offending bacterium (that's why you obtain a culture) while minimizing side effects.

PENICILLIN AND AMOXICILLIN GO TOGETHER..
BUT IF U'RE LOOKING FOR THE STRONGER DRUG? ITS AMOXICILLIN, WHY? HERE IT IS:

AMOXICILLIN It is usually the drug of choice within the class because it is better absorbed, following oral administration, than other beta-lactam antibiotics.

Penicillin and amoxycillin are both β-lactam antibiotics. Amoxycillin does have the benefit of being absorbed easier than other β-lactam antibiotics after oral consumption so it is usually prescibed over penicillin.
