So my bf just recently proposed, and we've set our wedding date for next June...I know it's waaaay too early to send out actual invitations, but should we send something out to our family and friends announcing our engagement and the planned date? My family's throwing us an engagement party, but I'm wondering about something more for out of state relatives and friends, who'll probably be attending the wedding. Any ideas??

it is common to send save the date cards to people if a lot of them will be traveling a great distances. it gives them a chance to make plans and save money.

It is not appropriate to send out an announcement about an engagement. People will hear by word of mouth. Save the dates should go out about 4 months before the wedding date, no sooner. People want to know to plan to attend the wedding but at the same time you don't want to come off as thinking that your wedding is more important than anything else.

You can send out an announcement now, similar to when a couple announces a baby. Something like "guess whos engaged".

Or you can send the save the date cards. Those typically go out about 6 months before the wedding and then the inviations go out 6-8 weeks before. I don't see anything wrong with sending out an engagement announcement.

I think using your engagement picture in the announcement would be a good idea.

You should send out save the dates to anybody who has to travel more than 4 hours to the wedding as soon as you know the date so they can book flights, hotels, and vacation time at work. If you aren't sure they will be invited don't send them a Save the Date until you know.

Formal invites go out to everybody 3-6 weeks beforehand...preferably more towards the six week end.

I wouldn't send anything until you had the hall and the church booked because you need to have a confirmed exact date like June 3, 2008. People can't plan on vacation time for the entire month and it would be such a pain to do corrections if you picked the wrong one!

You could send an engagement announcement if you wish, with the wedding date noted. But that's really not necessary, people usually find out by word of mouth through family and friends.

There are "save the date" cards you can send out. These are usually sent out 6 months prior to the wedding - much earlier than the invitations. Now is way too early to send out save the date cards. The tricky thing about save the date cards is that most brides want their save the date cards to match their invitations and any wedding "theme" they've envisioned. So....you'll need to think about that. If you don't want to make all of those decisions that early on, then you'll just have to be ok with sending save the date cards that might not match the invitation you end up going with.

Save the date cards are great and you can really have fun with them. I like the ones that are small magnets with a calendar on it with your date circled. I've also seen concert tickets made with your names and date on them that are really cool. Some have room for a picture, which is a great way to get more use out of your engagement picture.

A save the date card announcing your engagement might not be a bad idea.

For my engagement we sent out a 'survey'. Just to let people know the date and see how many we could expect to attend. My wedding is on an island and people have to travel but it could work fo you too!!

I agree with everything that pspoptart said except that I would send the invites 6-8 weeks in advance of the wedding.

It's called an engagement announcement. You can mention your wedding date in this announcement.
