Why will some Christians watch Harry Potter, eat Thai food under a Buddha statue, go to a meditation retreat, read their horoscope, donate to a Muslim charity, get drunk and get laid at a frat party, get a tatoo of an om symbol, ignore homeless people asking for food and shelter, and get their hair styled by a gay barber...

...but don't ask them if they want to go to a gay bar with you... because that's such a sin and they can't have fun watching people sin...

(it's not like people are having sex at the bar - and the drag shows and music are more fun than you'd have at most places.)

I don't really even spend a lot of time at bars, but I think it's just really strange that it's such a no-no for people... Even murder is better in some situations...

It makes me think that Christianity is 90% popularity contest. 10% spirituality.

i am a Christian myself and i wonder the same thing. as Christians we should use our resources to deal with more important issues facing the world such as hunger, poverty, and HIV. to me, these things are much more important than wasting my time shunning gays. really, what has become important in our world?

i would also like to add, that this seems to be such a big issue because the debating seems to go through trends. for example, abortion was a big issue about 10 years ago. it still is a big issue, but it isn't as hotly debated now as it was at one time. the issues Christians and non-Christians debate over go through trends. 10 years from now, we will likely be debating another issue, and the Gay debate will have probably cooled off.

If you know Christians that are doing the other things you describe...such as ignoring the homeless, reading about witchcraft, believing in horoscopes, etc., you are not seeing real Christians. People with a truly personal relationship with God and Christ would not be conducting themselves in those ways. It is totally against the principles that we adhere to. Those who claim to be Christians because they attend a specific church or because they have been confirmed and or baptized in a certain religion are "religious" people, but not people of God. For us, popularity is the last thing we would consider important. Standing up for and living our beliefs is where it is at for us. It is like saying that all republicans in government are politicians, but not all politicians in the government are republicans.

As far as gay bashing is concerned, true believers in God are commanded to love all people so gays and lesbians are loved by us as well. However, that does not mean that we have to love what they sometimes do, anymore than we have to love the sins committed by others. Sin is sin and we are told to fight against it whenever possible.

With Harry Potter, nobody is saying that the book is real and that witchcraft and sorcery are normal and natural. It is understood that the book is fictional. With eating Thai food under a Buddha statue, if one is simply eating food next to a cultural symbol (albeit a religious one as well), then that doesn't mean that one is embracing Buddhism. If one goes to a meditation retreat or reads a horoscope, these are things that can mislead and hurt people but are minor in comparison some of the things that Christians speak out against. Donating to a Muslim charity is not un-Christlike if that charity serves a purpose to help others to do good. Getting drunk is a sin, but again, nobody is going around saying it is natural to get drunk, people can't help it when they get drunk because they are born with that tendency to get drunk and their drunkenness should be embraced with open arms.

Same goes with "getting laid at a frat party". Nobody is saying that's okay or that getting questionable tattoos is okay either. It is not okay to turn one's back on a homeless person if you are able to do something to help them. There is nothing wrong with getting their hair styled by a gay barber. I had a great stylist once who was gay. I quit going to him not because he was gay, but because while he was great in the beginning, he gave me a mullett when I specifically asked him to make sure that didn't happen. The mullet spoke for itself and I was afraid to have another bad hair experience.

Any form of immorality and sin is wrong in the eyes of Christians. We sin too. We don't claim to be free of sin. The reason that we speak out against homosexuality more than the other sins is because with the other sins, nobody is saying that these sins are normal, that nobody can help these sins because they are born with the tendency to commit these sins and nobody is saying that we should all just accept the person doing these sins and accept the sin itself because they are after all, not really sins after all and we should just get over it already and be more accepting and tolerant instead of being bigots because we don't tolerate the sin. No, with other sins, people pretty much recognize them as sin and don't take issue with that fact. With homosexuality, it is the one sin that is shaping the culture of society the most and shaping the attitudes and beliefs of others because it is the one sin that seeks to promote itself as an alternative lifestyle that should be accepted by all and it is the one sin that people claim is specifically NOT a sin, even though the Bible plainly says that it is.

As for Chrisitianity being 90% a popularity contest, not one of us is sin-free and I sin all the time. Thankfully, Jesus paid the price for my sin, as He did for everyone. If you think that because I am a Christian who hold these beliefs that it makes me 90% more likely to be popular among fellow Christians, then you would be wrong. It is not the fact that our sins are forgiven and that we speak out against homosexuality and other sin that makes us popular among our fellow Christians. It is the fruits of our spirit that count. If our attitudes produce hatred, anger and resentment in others, then we are not behaving in a way that is spiritually pleasing to God. If our attitudes promote love, acceptance and compassion while standing up for truth, then we will remain true to the teachings of Christ and people will see that we are not trying to be bigots, but are loving them enough to speak the truth with kindness, love and compassion, the way we would hope others would do for us when we ourselves sin.

Christians are more anti-abortion than anything else.
Anti-Gay is pretty low on the list.
We are against homosexuals having special rights not guaranteed in the Constitution.

None of my Christian friends do any of the things you have listed above, and our church has its own homeless shelter, and I have spent eight years teaching in a homeless shelter. I don't go to a barber of any kind, I cannot speak on that subject regarding any of my Christian friends. I don't know how there hair is cut or where.

No, we won't go to a gay bar, or to a straight bar either.

Christianity is about pleasing God, not popularity.

I am a Christian and do not oppose homosexuality. I will not commit the sin of homosexual behavior and I teach my children to avoid it, but I also teach them that it is for God to judge people, not us. As such we show as much respect to a gay person as to anyone else (we are all sinners). As to drag shows, not my cup of tea. What many Christians find disturbing is not gay relationships. It is when gays try to change our culture in a way which conforms to their whims. We have had a definition of marriage for centuries. We like it the way it is and vote that way. We don't like homosexuality being taught as a normal and viable alternative as it is in many schools. We do not want "rainbow days" in school (which we pay for with our taxes) so the gay kids can be celebrated. Gays lobby for all of this. We push back.

True christians are taught to love everyone and it's doesn't matter what. Because GOD love's us so much he gave his only son for our sin's. We all sin, it started with Adam and Eve we were born into sin.were not perfect. But we try to please GOD with everything we do. The ones you are talking about are only fooling theirselves but not GOD. For all the non-believers that are leaving these answers you need to at least read Revelations( last book in the bible) and have someone who knows what it is saying. It's predicting what is going on in the world today and it is scary, for you anyway not me, I know where I am going. But I love you all and I'll be praying for you. And yes GOD does answer prayer's. I know because he has answered mine, 2 yrs ago I would have never thought in a million years I would be where I am today. I lost everything to crack addiction I was almost dead. but after praying to GOD to restore me he did. He gave me my family back, , a beautiful wife, two beautiful kids, a nice home, two nice cars. all within 2 yrs!!!! I still can't believe sometimes. But I had faith that he would. But the whole time before all of what I had became was because I was trying to be in control but look where it got me. But as soon as I turned to him thats when it all changed. I praise jesus holy name everyday. I just say to all of you that don't believe don't follow what everone else is trying to make you think. Believe whats in your heart. You ARE a part of GOD weither you like it or not . What is truly bad it's that non believer's see what you are talking about from "so-called christian" and it put doubts in your head. A true christian know's who GOD is through how the Holy Spirit makes us feel, believe at least when I say it's a feeling like none other, GOD bless you all!

I think I truly know the answer to this. Homosexuality is an easy target for some Christians. It is not as common as those other sinful things and most people are not tempted by it. Some are absolutely appalled by the thought. It's much easier to criticize something you aren't tempted by. No one speaks out against divorce like that do they? No, cuz lots of Christians are more tempted by that.

I don't agree with the homosexual lifestyle, but I do not agree with the fact that some Christians put way too much emphasis on it.

I for one am hoping gay marriage is approved everywhere because "Gay Divorce Court" will be the funniest reality TV ever. Who gives a sh*t one way or the other really? What a total non-issue to focus on.

You are right, they are tending to associate the hate to the person instead of the action and/or the mindset. To be honest, gays are people with souls, someone's son, daughter, brother, sister etc. We should respect their humanity and not what they do. We can not act above them when we lie, steal , lust etc. everyday. I am a Christian and I admit that is giving us a bad name.

Lol at your list of examples.

And I wouldn't particularly want to go to a gay bar either, but not because I'm anti gay or anything like that.
