My sister has made my brother the God father of her baby, however he's never been baptized or anything like that... the only time he was ever in a church has been for funerals and my sister's wedding. I always thought that someone had to be catholic to be a god parent.

Yes, I'm sure he wasn't baptised as an infant, he's younger than me (he's 18). My parents let us decide what ever reiligious beliefs we want. My older sisters chose to be catholic, one when she was 21, the other when she was 20 because she was marrying a christan man and his family wanted him to be married in the church.

It is true that the god parent did start with religion, but now in today's time the definition has taken on more of a meaning. It is now considered this, anyone that is appointed by the parents to care for their child, should they become incapacitated, or expire, is considered as the god parent. So, no, religion does not have to be a factor in being a god parent. Even so it be this, to be a god parent it must be recorded, by the parents, guardian, in a church, court, or in a will and testament, before the child would be handed over to the god parents of request.

Nikki, you are quite sure he wasn't baptised as an infant? I know twin brothers that have never entered a Church, but were baptised in their home by a Catholic Priest as infants. But their older sister was not, as far as I have heard.

The one baptising certainly has to have recieved what he is administering.

Lacrosse Girly, you misunderstood the point. To be a god parent, not a parent, one must be what he/she is blessed to assist the child in being. Even the term Fairy Godmother, taken from an Arthurian legend, meant a Catholic that promised to watch to fill in as a Catholic maternal influence where the mother was absent.

The Catholic Church only requires one godparent for Baptism. If there are two they must be male and female. The qualifications are: they must be baptized and confirmed, at least 16 years old and practicing Catholics. If there is only one godparent, then another baptized Christian can be a "Christian witness." But there is no allowance for an unbaptized person to be either. It would make no sense since that person or persons are to support the child in the Catholic faith.

The role of the God parent is to help raise the child in the faith, so yes, the person should be Catholic.

I should know. I'm a seminarian, and I just assisted at a baptism today.

Yes, I thought they had to be a practicing Catholic to have that position of honor in the child's life. They are supposed to be an example of the religion.

the role of the god parent is to pledge to help bring up a child as a christian....kind of hard to do if you aren't a christian, but not I guess impossible. And no, catholicism is not the only religion that uses god parents.

No, you do not. My father is a god-parent and he helps the child in growing up and financially (gifts and such) but he wasn't a Christian all the time, he later became one.

Yes they have to be to be a god parent. He either forged documents that made it appear as though he was baptized (which i doubt) or a priest or deacon was slacking quite a bit....
