To fish the suds at Jones Beach or Robert Moses, it's best to use a 10' to 11' fishing pole. I use a St. Croix Triumph 10'6" and it's light easy to carry. As far as reel, best is the Shimano Baitfunner 4500. I use 20 lb test Ande fishing line. Also a three way swivel with a snap sinker hook. For the St. Croix and Shimano, it's about $260. If that's too expensive get a Shakespeare Ugly Stik 10' and a Okuma reel.

Generally I use a 12' medium action fish stick with 10-25lb line capacity, mine is a Daiwa beef stick.

I started using a baitcasting reel recently but if this is something you don't do much then USE A SPINNING REEL!! that baitcaster will spool up and heat about to about 1200 degress and burn the hell out of your thumb, my baitcaster is a shakespeare tw30lb, works alright and holds 330 yds of line.

Weight wise I use 3-5 ounce pyramid or surf sinkers rememeber when surf casting USE A SHOCK LEADER because you will snap your mainline in twain if it is 30lb or below!!

Terminal tackle is basically the same, with a few exceptions, bigger swivels, larger weights etc.

And remember when casting (for me) I have found that the off the ground cast works best so far, just remember don't muscle it, finesse it.

Some accesories would be a sand spike (a piece os 2" pvc about 3' long and cut at an angle so you dont get any nasty sand on your reel, a hand gaff is nice, but not always necessary, I prefer using a hand gaff for stingrays and whatnot, but if I don't have one I'm pretty careful.

Hope all this helps!!

For my surf fishing I like a 12 foot pole, I have 6. I have spinning reels on three (Diawa Sea-line 5050) and casting reels (Penn #9) on the others. 3 are "Beefstick" rods and 3 are "Powertips". I use 15 pound mainline and a 50 pound shock leader. Hooks range from #4 long shank to 8/0 circle hooks depending on what fish is biting and what bait I am using. I take 3 gallons of freshwater to dunk my reels in just incase they get dropped in the sand are water too. While my set-ups are not the most expensive I have never broken one and I can cast as far as the expensive set-ups.
