I like to argue about the existence of a divine creator to theist. The only things I can't get past is when they say, GOD works in mysterious ways or GOD's plan is beyond our human minds to comprehend. Any thoughts on a comeback to that?

That is translated as the theist saying, "I really have no idea, so I'll opt-out of answering you."

My answer is usually something like, "most people once thought it was god's plan that we should never sail outside sight of land." How'd we manage to get around his plan that time?

Every time we learn a little more about the universe, god's "plan" becomes more pointless, and the mysteries become more explainable. Simple math says eventually we won't need the "god answer."

So they are telling you that they don't have a clue and are not interested in finding out. at that point there is honestly no response because they have just declared themselves to be wilfully ignorant. Ask what makes them think that there is a plan if you like, or why they think God would want to work in mysterious ways. To attack on these two claims is your only option at that point because they have closed any rational discourse on other points by making either of these irrational statements.
Those are both arguments from incredulousness.
"If I can not understand it it must be God".
I do not understand plumbing so that must be God's divine action at work as well.
Naturally idiots have more God(s) because there is much more that they find mysterious and can not understand.

The comeback is to agree and say, therefore you mean your belief in God is solely on faith? That is the meaning of religion isn't it. If there were 'Proof" why would we even need 'faith'? If there were proof, the whole idea of religion would be meaningless.
if someone has true PEACE, they don't need to know.

It makes just as much sense to be an athiest as it does to be a christian because devine knowledge or certainity that it does not exist are both beyond human comprehension. So why bother trying to figure it out. Follow your heart.

I asked a question about the 'beyond comprehension' argument earlier today:

The "mysterious ways" argument can be answered by this video on the "yes, no, wait" principle.

The odds that God was 'working in mysterious ways' and stuff just randomly happening is equal. Did God cure my dad's illness, or might dad have gotten better anyway? I mean, it's pretty mysterious that god heals cancer patients but not amputees.

it's certainly beyond the minds of the Jesus freaks to comprehend. You have to understand that these fools have been led around by their noses by the church all of their miserable lives, so that they no longer have the ability to think for themselves. They're very good at quoting the "party line" that the church gives them. "God works in mysterious ways" is their way of saying "You've got me. I don't have an intelligent response to your question."

If he admits that it is beyond his mind to comprehend, then why does he pretend to understand anything about god. How can he be sure that anything that he claims about god is true, if he admits that god is mysterious and beyond his comprehension.

Not a comeback, exactly. I just don't understand why God would want to be mysterious if he wants us to believe in him. Why all the secrecy?

Why have a comeback to an irrational statement, you can't have a decent argument with imbeciles

why do you NEED a come back? why can't you let someone have their opinion and be contempt with it? i mean, i love t argue about religion, philosophy and theist but really...asking about a come back is just a bit lame. why are you so atheist anyways? i mean, what don't you like about EVERY religion that makes you not want to believe in anything? I'm so serious, you should e-mail me sometime and we can have a huge debate!
[I'm christian BTW]

I usually snap my fingers and say: "That means you don't know." I then proceed to the next point. Call them on this stuff! What they're doing by saying things like this is dismissing it so that they can return to their delusional comfort levels. If you call them on it, you let them know that they aren't fooling anyone and force them to fess up to it. By abruptly moving on to your next point, you prevent them from fumbling around for a new excuse.
