A pomeranian dog, around age 1, suddenly acted sick. He started throwing up and acting lethargic. He wanted to stand in his water dish. We moved him inside. He immediately started having bloody diarreah. We moved him to the shower and ran to the store to get some pedialite to keep him hydrated. When we got back he was covered in feces, stank like dog saliva and was unresponsive. His breathing seemed labored. We called the vet, but it was the weekend so we had to wait for the vet to call us back. He died just a few minutes later. Upon inspection of his body, we found that his testicles were dark purple, almost black and when we pressed them lightly, blood came out of his anus. What could have possibly been wrong with him? And, should we be concerned for he health of our other dogs?

Yes, he was fine before this. It was all just so fast. My niece was outside playing with him just a few minutes before he started throwing up.
No, we have not had a recent exterminator.
It is possible that one of our nosey neighbors could have tried to poison the dogs, but why would just one of them gotten sick?

We will follow up with the vet as soon as we can. I know a lot about dogs, and especially pomeranians - I breed them. This is the strangest and scariest thing I have encountered yet!
Thanks for your input! All of you!

Your dog ate rat poison or was poisoned by rat poison, warfarin. For people with cardiovascular disease, warfarin in a low dose is prescribed under the drug name of Coumadin, which thins the blood and which you can google, or you can google Warfarin, which in high doses causes internal exsanguination. Your dog bled to death internally. If you want confirmation of this, or to officially determine the exact cause of death, you can take his body to the vet and ask for a necropsy, which is an autopsy on a non-human.

If you learn for sure that your little dog was poisoned and you think someone in your neighborhood may have poisoned him, you should report the incident to the police or to animal control officers. People who hurt animals intentionally are dangerous people, and if there might be someone in your neighborhood who hurts animals, the authorities should know.

If your little dog could have gotten into poison around the house or yard, you should check your rat traps or mouse traps, and remove them. I am a little more familiar with cats, and they sometimes catch and eat rodents who have ingested warfarin, and they too die.

I am so sorry this happened. You should try to get to the bottom of it.

I am so sorry you lost your dog. I have no idea what could have caused such a terrible thing unless he had an infection or injury of some sort. Could he have gotten a stick or some shart object that perforated an intestine? Your vet can do a necropsy to determine the actual cause of death. Based on what you've told us, I don't think this was anything contagious. Your other dogs should be fine as long as they have had their vaccinations. I would keep a close eye on them and call the vet if there is even the slightest hint of a problem. However, I think this was an isolated, tragic incident of some sort.

No offense, and this is probably true for you too, but that is by far the weirdest thing I've heard in a very long time. I am so sorry, that must have been awful. Explain what happened to your pomeranian to your vet as soon as possible and see what she thinks, and I wouldn't stop searching untill you find the answer. I wouldn't be too concerned about your other dogs, but your pomeranian could have eaten something that made it throw up and get very sick. I would be concerned about the fact that your dogs may eat the same thing your pomeranian did.

I'm so very sorry for your loss.

Sounds like he was poisoned. There had to of been internal bleeding too. I'm taking it he was outside as you brought him inside so he could have eaten/drank something he should not of.

Could anyone get to him outside to have maybe kicked him? I have seen similar things in rescue animals that have been beaten or kicked. I do think there is a greater chance it was poison though.

I would check the yard for vegetation poisonous to dogs. I would also give it a good scrub down the best you can. Also completely clean anywhere the Pom had been in the last few hours before he got sick. I would also check with your vet as you your other dogs. If it's not poison or beating it maybe something contagious. He will be able to tell you for sure, but I don;t think this is likely.

So sorry you lost your friend. That in itself is sad enough, but a dramatic death like that would be especially traumatic for the family. My sincere condolences.

I too go for poisoning above all else, because of the suddenness. Try to get to the bottom of it for your other dogs' and everybody else's dogs in the neighbourhood.

The only other thing I can imagine is an aneurism, where a major blood vessel burst and he just bled to death from that.

Very scarey indeed.

Please do keep us up to speed with the result. Your sad experience is an important bit of information none the less for other dog owners, and for somebody else might be the difference between losing a dog or saving him.

I definitely agree with the above person who told you to have the vet to do a necropsy. If this is part of a sickness that could infect your other other dogs, or a poison that could make them ill, too, you will want to know, so steps can be taken to protect them. If it was an isolated incident, you will want to know so your mind can be put at ease that your other dogs are safe.

Could he have gotten into some poison, like a rat poison? Have you had the exterminator out lately? They sometimes sprinkle poison crystals around the house to get rid of ants and roaches. Could someone be trying to to poison your dogs for some reason? I would definitely be concerned for your other dogs. It really sounds like poison to me.
So sorry for your loss.
