Because it turns off the part of my personality that tells me that I am worthless and can't do anything.
Seriously, you're 23 and have never drunk alcohol? You're missing out. I no longer enjoy getting drunk and seldom do it anymore, but alcohol is a wonderful thing when used sensibly. Sadly, you have to use it senselessly quite a few times before you understand the virtue of using it sensibly. But a good evening with a few friends and some good food and nice wine, or a sunny evening outdoors with the barbecue fired up and some cold beer....it doesn't get much better than that. Provided the cook knows his/her job. Which I do.
If you never ever drink alcohol then you are missing out on a major chunk of human experience, and don't try to tell me that you don't need to know what it's like because, believe me kid, you do. You just don't need to become an alcoholic, is all. There is only a sad and chilly virtue in never tasting alcohol.

I do it for a stress reliever !! I have a very stressful job and like to unwind with a few beers. This is a crazy world we live in and I enjoy the taste but I don't binge. I found I can't drink hard stuff I go crazy and do stupid things so I never touch the stuff !! Beer just makes me feel better and I don't dance but I will after a few beers !! I'm kind of shy and my feet stick to the floor unless I've had a few!! It's just the way I am!!

I've never been drunk but I've asked the same question offline. They do it for entertainment, to socialize, to destress (and forget their woes), to try to forget something or someone, to celebrate (say a graduation, a wedding, birth of a child, being with fraternity or sorority buddies, celebrating after a huge college exam), and sometimes it's a game to see who can drink who under the table (who can outdrink the other person), or it could be as a fraternity/sorority initiation. Usually they choose some drink they enjoy drinking, sometimes they choose sweet drinks which are supposed to get you drunk quicker. It feels like you're not in control (which is a true statement), feels strange, fuzzy headed (unclear), unable to walk and you have to hold up walls (lean against the walls), can't think clearly, don't or won't remember what you're doing or what you've said, sometimes the following day you have to apologize to the people you've hurt, it makes you unable to drive and respond quickly, intelligently, and properly (that's why there are so many accidents and so many people who get killed drunk driving). When you get home you're probably throwing up (hugging the toilet all night) and ruining good clothes and stinking up your place with that and burps, etc., and you feel louzy then and the next day when you have such a large and hurting headache that you don't know which way is up (like a migraine) and you're dizzy. And people call this "fun and entertainment". Some people can't take one drink without getting drunk. Others can drink a lot and their system can accept it. Some people throw pills into your drink when you're not looking and it's called "date rape". If people are addicted then it's something in their makeup (dna) that keeps them coming back for more.
Some people will try to convince you to join them socially and tell you, "don't worry there's no alcohol in this drink, it's a virgin drink"...don't believe them....Even in a virgin drink there is alcohol.

people do it because our soceity today is so geared to the concept that you cannot be happy or celebrate events without the use of alcohol.
to a degree people can be normalised to the concept of binge drinking if they see others do it on a regular basis whilst growing up.
personally i will drink alcohol very occasionally but in moderation because i hate the feeling of loss of control which many other posters on here have cited as the very reason that they enjoy alcohol.
plus if not a regular drinker the hangovers even from little alcohol can be horrendous.

I've never understood the appeal of alcohol be it spirits, wine, or beer. It all tastes horrible to me especially the various types of beers. I've tried a few times since the age of 17 to see if my taste buds changed or started to like alcohol, yet every time i would imbibe a shot or a bottle of brew it would taste bad to me. i could not understand why people brag and boasted about their favorite can of beer when each one of them tasted like ****. that includes both domestic and international too for the condescending beer drinkers who snide at my thoughts. another thing being, why would you want to destroy parts of your brain and liver while causing terrible headaches?
i've found that people drink for these reasons
1. the have a dependence on it which they create. it's called alcoholism, but anyone with determination can do without the substance. it's all a matter of mind over matter. so basically, it's a weakness trait. a crux, if you will. they want to forget something or runaway from an emotion so they dive into the bottle. however, as you may know, the problem never goes away and is there when the sobriety kicks in.
2. some people have restraint. they have maybe one or two shots of spirits or one can of brew, and that's it. they find relaxation in it. somewhat medicinal in nature. it may relax them or help their body. however, notice the restraint part. they are not chugging or drowning away.
3. some people are lemmings. they do it because they believe society mandates they do. just look at young people aka teenagers. even adults can fall into this grouping.
4. not to sound vulgar, but some people simply drink and go to bars to get some action in terms of sex or whatnot. alcohol can loosen up some people inhibitions.
5. some people just like to be idiots and caca-heads. they allow the beer or spirits to inhibit them and their thoughts so they can act crazy and ignorant. they think, if i drink the whiskey, i can blame it for my deeds and stupid words. they're just idiots.
I'm not a teetotaler or someone who believes in doing away with alcoholic drinks. i know alcohol can be used for such things as cooking and a few medical reasons. also, like i said, some people know how to utilize alcohol in a reasonable fashion and don't overindulge. alcohol is not the problem, it's the people who use it for the wrong purposes.

ALLLLLLL kinds of reasons. It affects different people in different ways. Some drink to escape. Some drink to be numb. Some drink to be social. Some drink to change their mood. etc.
Most people when they drink get a slightly tipsy, slightly euphoric, slightly out of control feeling. These effects will strengthen with a large quantity of alchohol drank. Others may react differently, getting an exiting in-control feeling, for example. This difference in reactions may partially explain why some become alchoholic and others do not.

Rashid, what the hell is the point in your existence? Either way, Energy drinks usually contain a tonne of sugar, especially the cheaper no brand energy drinks. I think 1 a day is pretty much tolerable, but even then you're consuming a lot of sugar, in excess of what you should be. If you exercise regularly this shouldn't be a problem, if you don't, just cut back a little, it all helps.

Hi
Why the sad eyes? I can't comment on why others drink to excess, I drink occasionally because it helps relieve stress and relaxes me but I tend to get full before I get drunk, the last time I remember being drunk was many years ago as a teenager, I got drunk on scrumpy cider, It was years before I'd even eat an apple.

Because they think it is fun. I never understood it either, and I do drink, but not to get drunk. How can you enjoy it not knowing what happen the night before, and get sick the next day with a enormous headache called hangover. Not to mention what it does to the liver, kidneys, the blood system, and the head. There is such thing called alcohol poisoning, even death. Even getting sexual diseases from someone you never met and don't remember who gave it to you. Don't they want to remember what happen and enjoy it with out any problems that may forever affect them for the rest of their life. For women they are so vulnerable of getting raped, or possible worst. Again because they think it is fun and they are invincible.
