Hang on now. ESWL is a very easy procedure. It usually uses "twilight," or light anesthesia as opposed to general and INTUBATION IS NOT USUALLY PRACTICED. Flouroscopic (moving x-rays) images are periodically taken to ensure that your stone is both located and fragmenting properly.

Heart rhythm is usually not a concern unless a cardiac pacemaker is implanted.

I'm a physician assistant urologist. I'm surprised with some of the answers provided.

lithotripsy is is not electrical the patient is hooked up to a monitor and the shock waves, which are more like sound than an electrical shock, are administered in sync with the heart beats so there is very little danger. I have never seen a person put under general anesthesia since it would increase the risk to the patient. Other than that the procedure is just as described previously by the Intern.

ESWL is extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.

It uses sound waves, not electricity to break up a stone without doing an invasive procedure.

I don't know if it affects the heart rate and rhythm directly.

As for the procedure, the person is put under general anesthesia and intubated so there is no pain. The shockwaves would hurt if the person was awake.
