Why is there always a Bible in hotels rooms? And, who are the Gideons?

The other answerer's have told you who the Gideons are, I'd like to tell you why they put bibles in hotels. It all comes down to the average Christian perception of sex. Sex happens quite a lot in hotel rooms and it's quite often adulterous sex or even, dare I say, forbidden sex. Putting a bible in the same room is a blatant attempt to make people feel guilty for having urges and desires and making people feel guilty is what Christians excel at.

Gideons International is an evangelical Christian organization dedicated to distributing copies of the Bible to those who might not otherwise encounter it, most famously in hotel and motel rooms. Bibles are given away in over 80 languages and more than 180 countries of the world

History
The organization was founded in 1899 in Boscobel, Wisconsin as an early American parachurch organization dedicated to Christian evangelism. It began distributing free Bibles, the work it is chiefly known for, in 1908, when the first Bibles were placed in the rooms of the Superior Hotel in Superior, Montana. The local railway station at the time was named Iron Mountain, causing confusion as to the name of the town.

The organization describes its link to the story of Gideon thus:

"Gideon was a man who was willing to do exactly what God wanted him to do, regardless of his own judgment as to the plans or results. Humility, faith, and obedience were his great elements of character. This is the standard that The Gideons International is trying to establish in all its members, each man to be ready to do God's will at any time, at any place, and in any way that the Holy Spirit leads."
In keeping with this symbolism, the symbol of the Gideons is a two handled pitcher and torch, recalling Gideon's victory over the Midianites as described in Judges, Chapter 7.


Who can become a Gideon?
A prospective member of the Gideons must be a Protestant or Congregational church member in good standing. A recommendation from the prospective member's pastor is required. You also must be a professional.

The Gideons are a group of people who go around giving New Testaments to people - they put them in hotels, in hospitals, prisons, schools, community centers etc.

They put Bibles in hotel rooms because they want to spread the word of God, and since Christianity is the most popular religion in the world, it's something a lot of people appreciate. It is also noticable that a lot of their work goes into providing Bibles for motels and homeless shelters - where they feel people will need the Word of God the most. If you're staying in a hotel, chances are you are away from your regular Church, you're away from home and on the road, and you may find that at that time you need a Bible more than ever. Also, really useful if you forget your Bible when you go on holiday!

Gideons are a group that distribute Bibles, free of charge. They used to come to the public schools and pass out New Testaments, with Psalms, and Proverbs included. I have one.

I'm not sure, but I heard they quit putting those Bibles in hotel rooms. Funny, though, I still find them there, and whenever I do I underline the interesting verses, like John 12:47, and Luke 14:26.

I guess they may not put them there any more, but they haven't taken them out, either.
