You want a manly dog that your mum can like too? Go with the Giant Schnauzer. They are 90-100lbs, do not shed and are used as police dogs in Germany!
Now, if you want an overgrown rat...ahem...I mean a small dog, then I would go with a Manchester Pinscher. They are manly, small and shed very little when fed food other than digusting Iams, Pedigree, Eukenuba and all those over commercialised brands. Go with Holistic Organic food like Solid Gold or Paul Newman's.

Schnauzers or yorkies may be the right dog then, but do look in to the breed a bit more. Like all breeds they have their quirks.
I have a schnauzer as a kind of compromise with my husband, he wanted a big "manly" dog and I wanted a small female one. I picked out my little schnauzer mix from the humane society. We both adore her, but I think my husband really gave her a chance because she looks like a boy (she looks like a carbon copy of the Tramp) Now he swears that schnauzers are the best breed there is and that he will never own another lab or german shep again.

I would recommend a miniature pinscher. They are a cute dog, but also a dog a man wouldn't mind owning. They do shed as with most dogs. Not a great lot though. Sizes vary with this breed and whether it is mixed with another breed. They are sometimes mistaken for mini doberman pinchers, but are in no way related to the doberman pincher. They are closely related to the german pincher. They have short coats, come in a variety of colors, for example : red, stag red, chocolate, black & tan , black & rust and blue.
To learn some more go to: http://wwwdogbreedinfo.com
click on purebreds, then click on letter (M) then scroll down and find Miniature Pinscher and click on it. There will be a picture of a miniature pinscher and some info on the breed. You can also look up other breeds on this site. There aer many purebreds and mixed breeds to choose from. If interrested in a mixed breed, click on hybrid and take a look at several mixed breeds listed also. Also go to area animal shelter. There may be a dog there that fits what you are looking for. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

Several people have suggested the wirehaired terrier breeds and I think thats a good compromise. most are not too big, shed little and are as far from foo-foo as a small dog can get... I'm thinking the wire fox (Asta from the thin man) or a welsh...

Here's a list of dogs that shed very little (as they will tell you on that page, ALL dogs shed at least a little)
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/lightshedders.htm
One of my favorite breeds on the list is the Scottish Terrier. I think they are adorable, they're not too big, and they're not too "foo-foo". LOL We only see one at the clinic where I work, and he's a feisty little thing.

Get a Schnauzer Miniature, Standard, or Giant.
Those other answers that say get a lab, beagle, jack Russel and any other breed that sheds. Need to do their homework. As for you. You need to do your home work too. There are too many dogs that do not shed to list.

West Highland Terrier. They're small, super cute and friendly but also quite strong and sturdy. It's coat doesn't shed too much. :-)

Poodles don't shed. Maybe a Standard Poodle(which is larger) would make them both happy. My self prefer a German Shepherd, but they do shed!
