Aw, nothing to be embarrassed about- it is the chlorine from the pool, bleach does this to me when I bleach our white sink every week, I reach in to pull up the sink stopper and the tips of my fingers where the bleach touched looks like I rubbed white out in them- you can actually see my finger print in white!
Possibly rub vaseline on them prior to swimming, it will shield your fingers from the chlorine bleaching your skin.
PS: for under the nail area, you can dip your fingers in alchohol, it cleanses any bacteria or fungus from under the nails.

It's just dead or dying skin. When I get a manicure the lady has me soak my hands/fingers, and then she gets rid of all that dead skin. She either trims it off, or uses a nail brush.
Get a nail brush at the dollar store,or drug store. Put it in the shower. At the end of your shower every day just rub gently with the nail brush on top and under your nails. That should keep most of it away. Don't rub hard or you are just creating more damaged skin.
You can use a nail clipper on the cuticle. I read articles that say do NOT cut your cuticle, but then the nail salon cuts it off with scissors! So I clip it gently and carefully.
Use hand lotion.
I bet nobody notices your fingers in the pool but you!

"get some kind of water on my fingers for a long period of time"
how long are you talking about? if it is more then an hour you got nothing to worry about. your skin just absorbs the water, especially the edges of your skin. It happens to me too. If it happens like 3~5 minutes, then I would suggest a doctor

You have very porous skin and (that means absorbent). It usuall happens in the very young and very thin. There's nothing you can do about it as far as I know. If it looks like blood has completely left the skin further than your cuticles...I'd see a doctor. Unless you've been in the pool all day.

Sounds like you have a nail fungus. Need to ask a doctor. If he confirms nail fungus, try tea tree oil for about 4 months.

that happens to everyone dear. nothing to be concerned about. the skin that gets very white is just skin that your body is about to sluff off, it is in other words, dead skin. completely normal.
