I'm not sure who said the Bible was "The Greatest Story Ever Told," but certainly the subject matter, running from creation to salvation to how we should live is well qualified as such.
But the Good Book was never written AS a work of literature; rather it is a collection of canonical texts regarded as source documentation and explanatory material for the religions which trace their own existence and current practice to the Bible. An argument can be made, and is made, that's it's not bad as literature either, when it comes to the King James Version, translated and arranged, as it was, by a lot of pretty bright authors back in the day. Simply as word-craft, the Psalsm ain't too bad, come to that.
It sells a lot of copies because it is a guide book, the central written work both for believers and those with an interest in the religions that proclaim the Bible as their history. To say nothing of all those Gideon Bibles found in hotels all over the world.
The fact that it is well distributed, however, does not mean that it is well read. There are plenty of old "family Bibles," in basements and attics everywhere, that once adorned living room tables all across the land. But they were there as symbols as much as anything else. The fact is that few people read and study it -and I mean as an act of scholarship. Therefore, we have today all the arguments among believers as to what it "really means ," much of which is played out in angry comments right here on Yahoo Answers.
I hope this helps.

Yes it is amazing. It's been on sale for ages and is still a best seller.
If you put in some effort you will find the characters are saying more than you are hearing. The whole book, both halves all sixty six parts has a plot that runs throughout to reveal in deed the Greatest Story ever Told.
I just wish people would put half the effort in bible study as they do reading fiction.
As a lover of sci-fi and fantasy I find the book enticing. As an observer of history
I find it factual.
How much effort do you put into research before you form an opinion. Or do you just believe what ever you want and make the world fit in your box?
God Bless!

The first five books of the Bible are science books,(facts not fiction). From Joshua to the end of the Bible are history books that tell what happened to the generations after the original nation of Israelites that God led out of Egypt. The Laws of Moses never changed and future generations always had to go back to following these laws for their curse by God to end. Which mankind will once again have to do to end God's curse today.

I would like to ask this question. If this is true why does the Bible keep selling so many copies? You ever think there just might be something to it?

The Bible can be the best seller book in the world, but it is the least read book in the universe. Only certain portions of it are meant to be read. The rest are contradictions or absurdities.

Given the length of it I would say the plot was ok. The writing was horrible. Look at the "soandso begat whatshisname" portions. I would agree that the characters were one dimensional with the exception of jesus and maybe Moses.

Not fiction
they were real people
Perfectly crafted Plot
It is the Best Book out there 2day and is 100% true. Listen 2 it. Whats better?
Living believe in GOD and following him and die and find out HE wasn't real or Living not believing in GOD and find out HE was real and Burn FOREVER in Hell.
Neither 4 me because when I die I know HE will be there.

I think the greatest story ever told is the one about Fnork the Norwegian dog who went up a hill looking for a bone and came back down having found spiritual fulfillment.
