Please, no "That's cruel" and that sort of thing. Just give me an age answer.

My sister-in-law is a certified dog trainer, and she uses them. It's not INHUMANE. It's a SMALL shock. God, people who are saying this, your dogs must run around and cause trouble.

Uhm, she lives in a different state now, so I can't ask her. However, it doesn't even hurt. I've put one on my wrist before at her house when she lived here, and it literally just "stuns" you. You obviously are ignorant, especially with that sort of thing.

It's not 'inhumane' to use e-collars. It's inhumane to have a dog you can't control. There are too many things out there than can hurt them, cars for example. In a perfect world you would have a dog that responds to your every command, but this isn't a perfect world. Dogtra makes an e-collar that has a buzzer/pager that more or less warns the dog that more is to come if he doesn't obey. I'm sure if you are working with a trainer that has experience with the e-collar she will make sure you are using it correctly.
I don't know what kind of pup you have, but I would wait until the pup has enough brain power to know to return to you. I wouldn't worry too much about what others think. You are always going to have someone tell you, no matter what you are doing, that there is a better way.

First why are you asking us this question if your sister in law is a "certified" dog trainer (who certified her?). Second if she is a trainer and she is using a shock collar she isn't a very good trainer. Good trainers can train with out causing a dog pain, they use positive reinforcement training. And last to answer your question, using a shock collar should be an absolute last resort in training and only if its for the dogs safety or safety of people and in the most extreme cases. A shock collars should absolutely NOT be used on a puppy.

First of all, I have used Electric collars for over 20 years with great success. I believe that there is no less stressful way to train a dog, period. Having said that, I hope you understand that I am a big advocate of them. Your question depends upon the breed, the age of the dog, what it is you are trying to accomplish, the temperament of the dog, etc? If you need help or advice on Electric collars you came to the wrong forum. Please feel free to email me if you need assistance.

My dog is very well behaved and I've never had to use electric shock to "keep him in line" I think shock collars should be against the law...it's like putting a shock collar on a child to keep them out of trouble, it's sick. If your relative knows so much about dog training ask her instead of total strangers that you knew wouldn't agree with you.

Sorry, but it is never necessary to use a shock collar on a puppy or dog. Gentle, reward-based training is all you need. Look for help with training from an experienced trainer.

start now to get the training started. puppies learn best when very young. we had a shock collar and it comes with a box that adjusts the volts. set it on the lowest voltage. our 3 dogs don't care though they just learned if they ran fast enough and jumped they could get out. i have heard to shave a an area on the animals neck. my biggest dog had thick wirey fur and so i think that's one reason it didn't phase him enough because the voltage was enough to stop a sheep.

It's appropriate to use a shock collar on a dog the same times it's appropriate on a human...that's right, never! Don't do it, don't be cruel!

When used properly...and not earlier than in 6 months ...reliable e-collar can be a great tool!!
Especially for people with disabilities.
It's NOT about electrocuting or harming your dog!!
Thank you for shittty points.
