It really depends on how long you've known the guy, and how often you talk. If it's been over six months, and you talk a good few times a week for longer than... I dunno. An hour or so (Depending on circumstances), then you're probably a decent candidate for a couple.
However, you also have to take into account how much you'll be able to handle being far away from the person, and if you can deal with a relationship without the physical love as well as emotional. If you guys can stay together long enough through that, perhaps you can meet up after you get out of school, or make a little trip out to where he lives over breaks.
I'm personally part of a long distance relationship myself, but I knew the guy for over a year before he confessed his love to me, and we're both able to see each other in person every so often. So far we've been together for nine months. So yes, they are possible.
But ifyou're not certain about any of these things. ANY of them, then I suggest holding back. You may be best off just as friends.
Good luck. ^^
(By the way, I'm a girl. I'm just using this name to look inconspicious if I write something weird. >>)

Just give it time-he's more of an "on line friend" don't rush into a romance or relationship so soon, get to know him & see what happens.
